The international tournament, which is in its inaugural year, is presented by Koho and will be hosted by USA Hockey and the San Jose Sports Authority. The tournament announcement was made by USA Hockey International Council Chairman Robert Allen (Lake Placid, NY), USA Hockey Executive Director David Ogrean (Colorado Springs) and Dean Munro (San Jose) of the San Jose Sports Authority. "Interest, enthusiasm and support for women's ice hockey is at an all-time high not only in the United States, but around the world," said Ogrean. "We're proud to bring an international event of this caliber, which features four of the leading women's ice hockey teams in the world, to the hockey fans of San Jose." According to USA Hockey Director of National Teams and International Activities Art Berglund (Colorado Springs), the United States and Canada stand as two of the top medal contenders heading into the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, where women's ice hockey will make its Olympic debut. The International Ice Hockey Federation has organized three World Championship tournaments for women's ice hockey (1990, 1992 and 1994), with Canada edging the United States for the gold medal each time. China was the surprise team of teh 1994 IIHF Women's World Championship, finishing fourth in the eight-team tournament. Japan did not qualify for the 1994 IIHF Women's World Championship but, as host nation for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, will receive an automatic bid to the tournament in Nagano. "The 1995 IIHF Pacific Women's Hockey Championship should provide an excellent preview of what promises to be an intense, well-played tournament at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Japan," said Berglund. Tickets for the 1995 IIHF Pacific Women's Hockey Championship will go on sale March 17 and may be purchased at the San Jose State Events Center (Mastercard, VISA and Discover cards accepted) or the Ice Centre of San Jose (cash purchases only). Prices range from $10 for a daily double-header ticket, $15 for a championship day double-header ticket and $40 for an all-tournament ticket package (includes all 10 games). ----------------------------------------- Game Summaries: ++++++++++++++ Here are some game notes from an anonymous onlooker. I have added a few comments in square brackets. -- Andria Day 1: Monday April 3, 1995 Canada 12 vs. Japan 0 Now this was the mismatch from the get go. Ever see those Japanese mothra movies on Sat mornings after cartoons, where the monster comes through and crushes everything. Well, that was the first period. I give Japan 3 stars just for skating on the same half of the ice as Canada. I think they got into the zone,...ummm twice. Well, no it would have to be a little more cuz the shots on goal at the end of the game was 62-5. And I think the scorer was generous about the shots on goal at the end for Japan. Canada has spiffy uniforms. Canada has fast skaters. Canada was holding a clinic....nuff said. Now, lets talk about Hayley Wickenhauser... geesus christ in a liferaft she is HUGE, and FAST, and scary. I think she has the hardest shot on your team...is this so? Number 9 was really good too, what a skater! Danielle Goyette(sp?)...? Help, I can't pronounce these french names, and I sound pathetic trying, so I call her Danielle Coyote.. I am from Arizona after all...:) Dupuis looked great, DeChamps, and Wilson looked great, and another gal who's name escapes me but I think is 16. [Marianne Grnak] Hey does someone wear your number? [#55, not that I know of] USA 3 vs. China 2 Now here was a good game. 3-2 was the final score, but China was WAY physical. Man oh man you should've seen the NHL caliber chopping that was going on in front of the net. I thought they were having a log chopping contest or something. Yipes! Us looked a little slow, and China had some darn good skaters. And is the US team big...one girl 5-11. Geez, ever heard of collegiate basketball, or volleyball? Number 20 [Beth Beagan] on the US team was a real good stick handler, Davidson..? Know of her from your games? [yes, former UNH Defense] China came back in the second and third enough that the goalie had to keep them in the game. Day 2: Tuesday April 4, 1995 Canada 9 vs. China 1 I was looking forward to this. I think China pissed off some of the Canadian women by their physical play. One of your teammates took a pretty hard wack, and had to be escorted from the ice by the trainer. I'm not sure she knew what zip code she was in... Lots of good play, but Canada seems to score at will. Did I say the part about Hayley W. being something. And Coyote was great this game too. Dupuis played real physical, and Grnak was voted most likely to smear her mascara since she was darn fiesty. She's defiantely going to have to go to church this sunday and confess her sins to god and everyone. Don't wait for her, she'll be there a while. USA 9 vs. Japan 1 I wasn't looking forward to this one, I left at the end of the 2nd period, it was already 13-0. Shots on goal 69-2...ugly. US looked a lot stronger than the night before. It will be interesting to see Canada and the US play. The way I see it Canada definately has the better stick handlers, but the US also has bigger size. Which, in the 3rd period when miss 5-11 is hanging off your leg, can get real tiring. It also seems the US has better shots from the point, except your teenager, but maybe that's cuz they didn't want to unload the big stuff till later. ----------------------------------------- Ticket Information: ++++++++++++++++++ Tickets are $40 for all tourney, $10 per day (2 game double-header), and $15 for the championship day. The Sharks have done some PR for it, and also had the team out in between periods for a meaningless award to give them some visibility at the last home game, and the local paper ran a full page on the thing on page 3 in the Sunday paper, and has done a couple of other, smaller things. They aren't being ignored, that's for sure. ----------------------------------------- Competing for Canada at 95 Pacific Rim: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Goal - Danielle Dube (Vancouver, British Columbia) Lesley Reddon (Mississauga, Ontario) Defense - Cassie Campbell (Brampton, Ontario) Judy Diduck (Edmonton, Alberta) Rebecca Fahey (Sackville, New Brunswick) Cindy Francoeur (Quebec) Chantal Leclair (Quebec) Fiona Smith (Alberta) Forward - Bobbi Auger (Alberta) Martine Berube (Quebec) Nancy Deschamps (Montreal, Quebec) Nancy Drolet (Drummondville, Quebec) Lori Dupuis (Williamstown, Ontario) Marianne Grnak (North York, Ontario) Mel Haz (Alberta) Luce Letendre (Quebec) Anne Rodrigue (Quebec) Laura Schuler (Scarborough, Ontario) Hayley Wickenheiser (Calgary, Alberta) Stacy Wilson (Moncton, New Brunswick) Head Coach - Shannon Miller (Calgary, Alberta) Assistants - Julie Healy, Danielle Sauvaugeau (both from Montreal, Quebec) ----------------------------------------- Competing for Canada at 95 Pacific Rim: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NO POS Name HT WT 94-95 Team 10 G Hong Guo 5-8 143 Harbin 1 G Lina Huo 5-4 154 Harbin 10 D Jing Chen 5-5 141 Harbin 2 D Ming Gong 5-7 147 Harbin 4 D Xuan Li 5-6 143 Harbin 11 D Hongqiao Liu 5-5 150 Harbin 6 D Yan Lu 5-5 132 Harbin 17 D Wei Wang 5-4 137 Harbin 5 F Hong Dang 5-6 132 Harbin 12 F Ying Diao 5-6 129 Harbin 14 F Wei Guo 5-6 143 Harbin 3 F Hongmei Liu 5-6 132 Harbin 19 F Jinping Ma 5-6 137 Harbin 16 F Xiaojun Ma 5-6 132 Harbin 9 F Hong Sang 5-6 135 Harbin 15 F Lei Xu 5-5 123 Harbin 8 F Xioqing Yang 5-6 176 Harbin 13 F Jing Zhang 5-6 121 Harbin 7 F Lan Zhang 5-6 125 Harbin Head Coach: Yu Zaizhou Asst Coaches: Yao Naifeng Jin Guang Zhang Zhinan ----------------------------------------- Competing for Japan at 95 Pacific Rim: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NO POS Name HT WT 94-95 Team 00 G Michiko Katahira 5-7 137 Iwakura P. 1 G Yuka Oda 5-3 114 Iwakura P. 2 G Tamae Satsu 5-8 132 Iwakura P. 8 D Akiko Hatanaka 5-4 125 Iwakura P. 19 D Maiko Obikawa 5-3 147 Iwakura P. 10 D Chie Sakuma 5-3 141 Iwakura P. 16 D Rie Sato 5-3 132 Iwakura P. 9 D Yuiko Satomi 5-3 118 Sports System F. 20 D Naho Yoshimi 5-3 123 Kokudo Ladies 18 F Miharu Araki 5-3 112 Iwakura P. 17 F Shiho Fujiwara 4-9 128 Iwakura P. 7 F Mitsuko Igarashi 5-2 114 Iwakura P. 5 F Akiko Iwase 5-2 106 Iwakura P. 11 F Akiko Naka 5-1 121 Sports System F. 3 F Yukari Ohno 5-6 137 Citizen Ladies 15 F Masako Sato 5-2 128 Iwakura P. 12 F Aki Sudo 5-0 121 Rokkatei Bears 14 F Yuka Takaya 5-3 121 Koduko Ladies 13 F Yoko Tamada 5-2 99 Rokkatei M. 4 F Yuki Togawa 5-0 110 Rokkatei Bears 6 F Mai Usami 5-2 103 Iwakura P.
