I am the father of two avid female hockey players. They are both the only females on their team. Currently the one of them is playing at the Pee-Wee level and the other at the Midget level. I have been told that colleges that provide Men's hockey scholarships are required to provide an equal number of Women's hockey scholarships. I have two questions related to that information: 1. Is this true? 2. If so, what colleges provide hockey scholarships for women? Any information that anyone has would be appreciated. They are the only girls on their teams. They are doing well, but want to improve their skills as rapidly as possible. I want to be able to provide them with the tools to do so, but being new to this, and not having unlimited financial resources, I am not sure where the highest and best use of funds should go for training. I sent them to a local hockey camp last year, but was not impressed with the way it was conducted for what it cost. I know that it is early to be thinking about next year's hockey camp, but forewarned is forearmed. I am looking for opinions on the following: 1. What is the best hockey camp that I can send them to? (So far Pinticton, B.C. and Heartland in MN have been recommended to me) 2. Should I send them to a girls only hockey camp, or keep them playing with the boys? 3. Are the Laura Stamm Power Skating Courses helpful? Any experiences/opinions you may have will be appreciated. One of the on-ice teachers is a woman who plays for Harvard and she is a good role model. The camp also has a mix of girls and boys as students. The camp emphasizes development of fundementals and development of self-confidence. BTW - Hockey America Camps also offer a one-week women's novice camp in late July. Because of this, nobody's been able to contact the server since Friday afternoon. It's up, you just can't find it. The nameserver problem is being investigated and I hope it'll be fixed early this morning. When that happens, all of the mail queued in and waiting will start processing, so this is an explanation over the weekend's silence AND a warning that when the silence ends, it'll probably end with a bit of a bang. If for some reason your system times out queued mail and returns it to you, wait until you see mail flowing and then send it again. If it doesn't return it to you, there is no reason to send it again. Please don't send multiple copies of a message because of the silence. I've just thrown in my little two cents even though I'm not playing on a college team or even on a womens team. I hope nobody minds. I'm just thinking of younger women who want to get into hockey, but don't know where to go or what it will be like. We have to remember that not all of us are from the lakes areas, but I think just examples of what's out there nation wide helps everyone get involved. I say go for it. I know that the club teams at West Virginia University and at Bowling Green State University were left off the list. >Is there any interest out there for compiling a list of teams that >are not associated with any school? In the USA, the place to start in finding a female team is to contact the Girls/Women's Section Representative for your district. In Ontario, you call the OWHA (the governing body for female hockey), and in other Canadian provinces you call the governing body for amateur hockey. In all these cases, the regional rep or provincial governing body will have a list of teams/organizations, but they may be last year's contacts for last year's registered teams, and they don't necessarily know about new local initiatives to start female hockey programs. Perhaps it would be useful to get the female hockey contact lists from each Girls'/Women's Rep, post them to the world wide web and/or mail them out, asking people to provide more recent information, including "leads" on prospective teams and associations which have not yet made it to USA Hockey's lists. Such a contact list could include information about how many teams of each age division the association has in 94-95. I have the list from Mid-Am District, as well as some more recent information about the clubs in Mid-Am. And just a reminder - if you ever move to a city (or a college campus) where there is no female hockey, but there is an ice rink, don't take no for an answer! *You* can start female hockey in your area, with help from the regional rep/provincial governing body. If anyone would like to discuss starting female hockey programs, feel free to write to me. If you do make such a list, I would like to add this information to my women's hockey web pages. I have some information on women's hockey (non-university) in Ontario, but nothing at all on women's hockey in the US and in the rest of Canada. Even if I we just provide the phone number of the Girls/Women's Section Representative for each district, that would be a good starting point for young girls/women who are interested in taking up hockey. I started playing hockey, of at all times, when I was in graduate school. I had been an avid mens college hockey fan for years, as I got my undergraduate degree from Wisconsin and was in the Marching/Hockey/Basketball band for 4 1/2 years. I sort of knew how to skate, I think that growing up in Wisconsin it's pretty much one of those things your parents do with you in the winter. But I had never really thought of playing hockey. My brother played a little in high school on the local pond, but I never thought much of it. Then came grad school. The department I was in had hockey as an activity available to the grad students. But that wasn't really enough to get me there. I started going out with another student who played regularly and he convinced me to try it. It was actually a good program, every other week they had more of a beginner week where they played with a "soft" puck, basically a glorified Nerf product. Anyway, I really liked it, so the next semester I signed up for skating class (a PE elective) so that I could get better. One of the women in the class was on the women's club team, and got me interested enough to look into it. The next year I joined, and the rest is pretty much history. Even though I'm not still attached to the guy who got me interested, I'm still playing hockey. I am so into it that when I graduated and moved from Wisconsin, I had to find a team to play on. So now I drive about an hour every Sunday night to practice (from 10:10 - 11:40 PM). I play on the C team of the Chicago Ice, and one day hope to be good enough to play on the B team. Although, since this year I've taken quite the liking to center (versus wing), I'm sure it will be a while until I move up, we have two really good centers on B right now. An ironic side note in the story is that one of the guys my brother used to play with on the local pond, played with the group of people from my graduate department. He and my bother had lost contact, but he remembered the name, and made sure to let me know who he was. Now that I've "talked" your ears off, here's some of the stuff I would like to see on this list. Resources - women's teams, camps, etc it looks like we have a good start to this which is great Scores/standings - both of college and non-college leagues - and of course as '98 approaches, Olympic updates Outreach - let's let women know we are out here, there are some publications for women's hockey, maybe we could have them give us a blurb Other - good drills, volunteer coaches, how to get better Wendy Istvanick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 1995 16:54:55 -0500 (EST) From: sharon s spaeth Subject: intro Hi everyone, I am kind of new to this server so I thought I would introduce myself. Chuq (list mom and software gnome) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Feb 95 04:02:01 PST From: Ray Barton Subject: WPL: Sunderland Scorpions -v-Guildford Lightning Sunderland Scorpions 3 - Guildford Lightning 2 An astounding game of Ice Hockey took place at Crowtree Leisure centre when the Guildford Lightning took on the undefeated might of Sunderland Scorpions at their home rink on Sunday the 3rd of February. Guildford & GB Captain Kim Strongman opened the scoring early in the 1st period (5.49), with a goal that rocked the Scorpions defence and sent the former GB netminder Emma Bowles sprawling over the ice. Kim weaved round the Sunderland defence, dekeing one of them so far that she had to pay to get back into the arena before placing a shot straight into the corner of the net. At 8.52 a defensive error on the part of Guildford allowed Sunderland to equalised with a goal from the Scorpions newest & youngest GB player Teresa Lewis on the backdoor of Lightning netminder Gill Barton who after making the initial save was trapped under some Sunderland players and was unable to struggle free to get to the shot. Guildford again took the lead in the at 13.12 with an excellent piece of teamwork from the 2nd line. Centre Fiona King (Man of the Match) drew Bowles to the far left post before making a last second dead mans pass across the net straight onto the stick of linemate Judith Fairley who then slammed the one timer into the back of the net before Bowles had even tried to move across the net to cover the shot. From this point on the game was marred by dubious officiating, the referee Blenkinsop who had said at the start of the game that he liked to keep the game flowing, suddenly decided that he would call "every" minor incident as a penalty, calling the first of many only 1 minute 32 seconds after Guildford had took the lead again. Guildford held off the Scorpions as long as they could in the second period with very few 5 on 5 situations until eventually at 25.04 Lynsey Emmerson got the equaliser. Throughout the 3rd period the Lightning played short-handed and as you would expect yet another goal was put in place by Sunderland giving them the lead for the first time in the game. Lightning Head Coach Ray Barton then called his time-out, and after that even though Guildford had mainly been in control of the game they seem to come back out with full vigour and with the referees whistle still placing Lightning players in the box, they took FULL possession of the game and short-handed kept the play in the Sunderland end of the rink, even at one point when facing a 5 on 3. Credit must go to the Guildford Lightning in this game for their teamwork and skill when not only facing the current top team in the country but the officiating as well. All in all the girls had a great weekend away staying in a very nice hotel where we have been told that we are welcome back at any time, unlike some of our counterparts in the league. o \____/|) Ray Barton G u i l d f o r d /> Head Coach / / z z / /_ / / / /_ /__ / / / /_ / / / // LIGHTNING // Internet:-) Ray_Barton@ccm.isw.intel.com Compuserve:-) 100074, 1640 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Feb 1995 08:55:09 -0500 From: "Andria L. Most people are very keen and interested in women's hockey, but the general consensus is that there is just not much info out there. However on occasion, I get mail which is not very positive at all, and I am tempted to delete it immediately without replying at all (although I realize that that would do nothing to rectify the situation). I received one such message the other day. Here is a message which I received from (phalonen@mtu.edu) (Phil Halonen), followed by my reply to his message: His mail message to me... >Why would you want to chart your undoubtedly successful hockey >career on the web? Do you think anybody really cares? My reply... If it inspires just one young girl to play hockey, then it was well worth it. I'm not sure if you know much about women's hockey, but it is quite lacking in publicity and public awareness. This is the kind of thing that is needed to promote it. I doubt you have looked at all my web pages ... as there are many that don't just talk about MY career, but rather women's hockey in general. I really doubt that I would get the same reaction if I was a man who had played for the men's Team Canada. I think that it's the lack of respect for women hockey players and for women's hockey that triggers this sort of a message. Any comments? If you caught any discussion about World Cup soccer on sports radio in the U.S. you know what I mean. Still, I have to agree that women's sports in general have, unjustly, been snubbed by the sportsfan. What I keep hearing is "Until the caliber of play improves dramatically, you couldn't drag me to one of these things..." I think that kind of comment reflects a misunderstanding of what sports is really about. It's about the athletes struggle to triumph in spite of obstacles, to bring out a personal best in each game and for the spectator, it's about seeing something new and unique every time you visit the arena. It's about rewarding effort and being rewarded for effort. It's about teamwork, the sum being greater than it's parts. It's about strategy, outthinking (or second guessing) split second decisions. It's about suspense and highs and lows. It's about time I stop ranting. Anyway, Andria, I hope you maintain your WWW and gopher sites (even though I don't have access to either). Be proud of your accomplishments and those of other women's hockey players. I honestly believe that women's athletics will be appreciated the same way men's athletics is now. Any "manhood" that can be protected by putting down random women for their achievements isn't exactly a manhood I feel is worth protecting. And basically, that's what they're doing -- trying to make themselves feel better/bigger/stronger/macho by trying to take another successful person down a notch. At some level, it's a form of gunslinger syndrome, but more realistically, it's simply another bully trying to prove something to himself or his friends. Note, of course, bullies never pick on someone their own size -- it's always someone they see as less physically able to protect themselves. After all, if it were a fair fight, they might lose. And frankly, losers they are. That's why, in general, when they come slinging at me (as a fairly visible net-denizen of long tenure, I get my OWN set of gunslingers looking to put a notch on their modems), I generally try to ignore them. I don't like to waste time responding, because I rarely have time to waste on idiots and it serves no useful purpose, and it's not worth escalating, because every so often you'll find that one clinical loonie who can make your life really miserable. The construction workers on the scaffold is a good analogy here: simply hope their intersection in your life is short and unpleasaant, and get it over with as quickly as you can. Confrontation won't change their attitude or solve the problem, but it COULD create other, worse problems. So move on. While it might feel better to "give them the finger", all that does is reinforce their behavior. These guys get off on the feedback. They like getting rises out of people. Silence is the way to piss them off, and make them go elsewhere for their jollies. >I really doubt that I would get the same reaction if I was a man who had >played for the men's Team Canada. I think that it's the lack of respect for >women hockey players and for women's hockey that triggers this sort of >a message. Any comments? I even think it's simpler than that: it's a disrepect for women in general, and belittling women's accomplishments in general. Women, you know, shouldn't be playing big studly man-games. They should stay home and have babies, like God intended. (pheah). Andria: I pulled the information off of your web and gave it to my two daughters. They are using it as motivation to excel in their hockey playing. This is their first year playing. Despite that, the youngest (11),has 3 goals and 13 points playing Pee-Wee with the boys. The oldest (14), is playing in a combined Midget-Bantam league with the boys, (up to 17 years old). Despite the age difference, and her inexperience, she has 2 goals and 17 points, including one playmaker award. They each printed out their own copy of your career highlights and are using it as inspiration to reach their goals. The two of them were asked to play on a select women's team from WA State for a series of regional tournaments next month. They will be playing teams from Spokane, Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, Summerland and Penticton (both B.C.). Thanks for making the information available. You can be assured that there are at least two girls using it as inspiration! There was one woman on our team last year (actually, Steph Boyd, who played on Team USA 94) who special-ordered her sticks with a "Japan" model shaft. The thickness of this shaft is somewhere between a regular stick and a junior stick ... perfect for women with small hands ... and easier to get flex out of the shaft. In any event, I was hoping for some info on BEGINNING women's hockey in the Boston area. I just started playing last year with my company team (I'd never played before, and I was the only woman on the team - very intimidating, but the guys were pretty good to me - especially when I ended up being one of the committed few at the end of a long season!) and on an 8 week women's league, but then wimped out on the team I was practicing with in the fall (scheduling conflicts - I just can't practice at 9:40-11pm on a weeknight! and who's idea was it to have games on Sunday afternoons anyway?), so I'm now looking for other opportunities. I'd also like to find something more at my level - the team from the fall was fun (and the coach was very encouraging) but I was so far behind most of the "kids" who'd played in school that I just felt like dead weight. Silence is the way to piss them off, and make >them go elsewhere for their jollies. I think that the manner of the confrontation depends a lot on whether or not it is worthwhile. If I was to reply in rage, I think that that is what he was looking for, and it would make him gloat in satisfaction. However, if in my reply I remain level-headed, confident, and informative, then who knows, perhaps he might actually learn something from it. I have not received a reply from him, so it appears that sending him this type of a reply also works to make him go elsewhere for his jollies. So, I guess there really are 3 different ways to deal with these types of mail messages: (1) not to reply at all. (2) send an insulting, sarcastic, reply that perhaps attacks the sender personally. (very tempting!) (3) send an informative, message that does not have a notion of rage or rebellion. In summary, I aggree that option (2) will definitely not accomplish anything positive. I think that options (1) and (3) are both okay, but I tend to prefer option (3), because I feel that there is a remote chance that the person sending this mail could actually learn something and perhaps change his/her attitude a little. It may not make a difference for some people, but if there are a few for which it does, then I prefer to take the time to send them a reply as outlined in option (3). She shared the goaltender duties with Manon Rheaume on Team Canada 1994. Here is some info about Lesley which was not overly publicized, so you probably haven't heard it ... Lesley is a Grad Student at the University of New Brunswick and has been practicing with the men's university team there. On January 17th, the number one goalie for the University of New Brunswick Men's team (Frank Leblanc) got mono, so Lesley had the opportunity to dress for their last 7 games. She made CIAU (Canadian University Hockey) history on January 28th when she played the third period against Mount Allison. She had 7 shots on her and didn't let in any! Frank returned for the final 2 games of the regular season and the playoffs. The UNB Varsity Reds finished the AUAA regular season in first place in the MacAdam Division with a 18-4-4 record and were ranked 5th in the country. Lesley will be playing with the Canadian team at the Pacific Rim Competition in San Jose, California from April 1-8, 1995. Just thought you might be interested ... I am on the ice four times a week and I'm a member of two leagues, one co-ed and one womens. I am constantly reminded of the differences between men and women while on the ice even if I'm with only women. I am glad that men and women are different, but when playing hockey I have a constant obstacle because of it. Now through other women I've learned that it is my responsibiliy to push even harder than others to prove the masses wrong. When I heard that the Olympics were going to include womens hockey, it brought tears to my eyes. I just joined this list and thought I would tell you a little bit about myself. Needless to say, I like hockey. However, I have never been very involved with hockey much less played it. All has changed this past year when my son begged to play hockey. His name is Royce. He is five years old and is in his first year of the hockey initiation program. Based on the past year, I would say he will be happily playing hockey for the rest of his life. My two year old is also showing interest in the sport. One of his first words was "score"! Where does this leave me? Spending lots of time at the ice arena. I have been helping on the ice (mostly teaching the very young kids who had never been on ice skates before how to stand up and skate). I'm also the only one who admits to knowing how to run the scoreboard so that s how I spend my time when we have the kids playing a "real" game. Hockey fever is catching. I find myself thinking why should my kids be having all the fun. The problem is I have never heard of any women's hockey in town. (I live in Des Moines, Iowa.) Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can become more involved and help my kids in their hockey development? Thanks for any advice you have! Dear Nan, Three suggestions: 1. Check with the local university, there may be some college students who're playing (some will be beginners) who would welcome an extra pleasant player who's willing to pay their share of ice-time cost and work at improving. 2. Check with USA Hockey (719 599 5500 - Colorado Head Office). They are the prime organisers of youth hockey, and are also starting to push girl's hockey. That means that they have at last recognised that there are some adult women players who're interested in forming teams and competing (at various levels). They have a central coordinator who could give you the names and telephone numbers of the contacts for all the registered women's teams in and around Iowa. 3. Contact the local referee's association. You could either phone USA hockey (same number) to get the local supervisor of officials, or more efficiently, ask whoever is in charge of arranging games in the local youth hockey group to give you the number of the local assigner of refs.. Actually, since you confess to running the clock in `real' games, you could always ask the refs in between games (game sheet signing time) who assigns the refs (but do tell them WHY you're asking, or they'll assume the worst!!!!!). The ref assigner can do two things for you: a) tell you if there are any women's teams around that they arrange refs for, and give their contact person, so that you can see if you could start playing with them. b) get you involved in reffing next season (only real initial qualifications are that you can skate and that you can learn to be deaf!). Both of these would get you more involved and more into the game. I would recommend that you find out from your association when the next Associate level coaches program is being conducted. This is a great way to learn more about the sport and help your kids. Then offer to be an on-ice assistant or assistant coach for your kids team next year. On another note, if there is an adult hockey league in your association, join a team and play. The leagues are co-ed and non-checking. It would be tough for your boys to tell you that you don't understand how hard it is to do something on the ice, if you are doing the same thing! Recently I've been told she's on US TV in an advertisement for roller hockey. Can anyone confirm this and what she's doing now (preferably by published stuff that could be used in a paper, but any type of confirmation is fine). Actually, this is pretty ironic, but I received a letter from Manon in the mail last night ... so that means that she was in Charlesbourg Quebec this week (at least). Finally, some real info on this tourney. The international tournament, which is in its inaugural year, is presented by Koho and will be hosted by USA Hockey and the San Jose Sports Authority. The tournament announcement was made by USA Hockey International Council Chairman Robert Allen (Lake Placid, NY), USA Hockey Executive Director David Ogrean (Colorado Springs) and Dean Munro (San Jose) of the San Jose Sports Authority. "Interest, enthusiasm and support for women's ice hockey is at an all-time high not only in the United States, but around the world," said Ogrean. "We're proud to bring an international event of this caliber, which features four of the leading women's ice hockey teams in the world, to the hockey fans of San Jose." According to USA Hockey Director of National Teams and International Activities Art Berglund (Colorado Springs), the United States and Canada stand as two of the top medal contenders heading into the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, where women's ice hockey will make its Olympic debut. The International Ice Hockey Federation has organized three World Championship tournaments for women's ice hockey (1990, 1992 and 1994), with Canada edging the United States for the gold medal each time. China was the surprise team of teh 1994 IIHF Women's World Championship, finishing fourth in the eight-team tournament. Japan did not qualify for the 1994 IIHF Women's World Championship but, as host nation for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, will receive an automatic bid to the tournament in Nagano. "The 1995 IIHF Pacific Women's Hockey Championship should provide an excellent preview of what promises to be an intense, well-played tournament at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Japan," said Berglund. Tickets for the 1995 IIHF Pacific Women's Hockey Championship will go on sale March 17 and may be purchased at the San Jose State Events Center (Mastercard, VISA and Discover cards accepted) or the Ice Centre of San Jose (cash purchases only). Prices range from $10 for a daily double-header ticket, $15 for a championship day double-header ticket and $40 for an all-tournament ticket package (includes all 10 games). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11995 IIHF Pacific Women's Hockey Championship Presented by Koho Competition Schedule All games played at the Ice Centre of San Jose Round Robin April 3 Canada vs. Japan 5:30PM USA vs. China 8:30PM April 4 Canada vs. China 5:30PM USA vs. Japan 8:30PM April 6 Japan vs. China 5:30PM USA vs. Canada 8:30PM Cross-Over Round April 7 #1 seed vs. #4 seed 5:30PM #2 seed vs. #3 seed 8:30PM April 8 Bronz Medal game 5:30PM Gold Medal game 8:30PM For more information, please contact: Darryl Seibel/Kris Pleimann, USA Hockey, (719) 599-5500 Debra Hall, San Jose Sports Authority, (408) 288-2932 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ USA Hockey is a member of the United States Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation Chuq Von Rospach chuqui@netcom.com * GEnie:chuq * AOL:chuqui * CIS:75141,1242 chuq@abs.apple.com * Apple Business Systems * Software Gnome {Member Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America} Home page: http://abs.apple.com/~chuq/chuqui.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 1995 09:30:33 -0500 (EST) From: Juliet D H Cheheyl Cc: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Background on Manon? And his story went something like this: I've been playing pick up ice hockey, but now I've really gotten into this roller-blade thing. But the other day this girl was playing and I had never played with a girl. She was doing pretty good [his grammar not mine] and then when we came close she was getting physical. I thought "oh, she's flirting with me!" [To give him the benefit, I must interject that his smile showed his 20/20 hindsight] I started getting physical back, until she dumped me on my butt. I was very excited about the 3rd place finish for Switzerland! I spent a year in Switzerland playing hockey, so not only did I develop a soft spot for their chocolate and cheese :-)~ , but also for their women's national team!! I was really glad to see them do so well. Since Latvia finished last in the championship, they will move down to the B European Championship next year. The winner from the B European Championship moves up to the A European Championship next year. The B Championship is taking place right now. Andria P.S. Getting ready for product intros can be a pain, but it's worth it. One good thing: this has gotten pretty good press and good support from the Sharks. The Sharks have done some PR for it, and also had the team out in between periods for a meaningless award to give them some visibility at the last home game, and the local paper ran a full page on the thing on page 3 in the Sunday paper, and has done a couple of other, smaller things. They aren't being ignored, that's for sure. I still don't think that 3-4 paragraphs is good enough considering that the rest of the paper is all about men's teams, but it's better than nothing. Sorry, I can't give more information than that cause it's at home and I'm at work :-(. Also, thought you might be interested to hear that there's a local BayBanks TV commercial for their 24 hour phone access that shows a father talking to the bank at 5:30am while his "child" puts on pads, jersey and helmet (all of this seen from the child's eyes). The kid gets downstairs and starts tugging on Dad's coat to leave, and then takes off the helmet - shaking out long blondish hair, while he says something about having to take his daughter to practice. Although it's supposed to be "shocking" (maybe surprising is a better word) it's still nice to see the image it portrays. Also, I think BayBanks is Bobby Orr's company these days, so maybe that's got something to do with it. ttfn... ________________________________________________________________________ Valerie J. Our experience in Ontario indicates that in the long run, once the level of competition available in female hockey was equal to that available in Ringette, most players were in favour of switching. Some parents have objections to the idea of their daughters playing hockey, because the only hockey they know about is male hockey. The female hockey organizations need to educate the community about female hockey: that it is no-checking, that little girls' hockey is not a violent or dangerous game, and that the values of your organization promote teamwork and skill development and fun, not just competition. In my opinion, the growth of female hockey in an area will be greatly helped by the following factors: Form a separate local association from the existing boys' and men's hockey associations. If everybody in your organization is in it because they are committed to _female_ hockey, you will have much more freedom and power to develop female hockey. Affiliate with existing or new adult women's hockey in your area. Many women who enjoy playing at the recreational or elite level would love to "give back to the sport" as organizers, coaches, or referees for your organization. Try to ensure that you don't turn anyone away because they are too old or too young. Never stop recruiting. Always welcome beginners at every age level. As far as you can do so, accept new players all year long. Impress on every player and on every parent that recruiting is their job too. Be democratic. Ensure that your association has and abides by a constitution. Make sure that every player and/or her parent has a vote in choosing the people who run the association. Make sure that your treasurer provides an explanation of the finances (audited statement) to the members every year. Make sure that the less skilled or less competitive players are treated fairly. Contribute (opinions and work) to your provincial and national governing body. If your area has municipal arenas paid for by your taxes, work with the employees of your municipality, your elected officials, and your local media to ensure that females have equal access to those facilities. I wish your organization all the best. It sounds like you're off to a good start. Louise -- *Louise C. I can't report on the whole tournament by any means but I can give my impressions (as a first time skater at Brampton) and the results that I remember from the level I played at. For those of you who haven't heard of the Brampton tournament, it's an annual womens/girls tournament now in its 28th year. This year there were 302 teams from Cananda and the US. I play for the Chicago Ice, an adult women's hockey group. I say group because we really have two teams, both playing in a newly formed league comprised of teams from Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. One team plays in the C level league (that's the one I play on) and the other plays in the B level league. For Brampton we combined teams to get enought skaters and played D competitive. It might seem strange that we played at a lower level, but it seems (to us at least) that the abilities at the different levels vary greatly depending on where you are located. Anyway, last year our team had only mustered 7 skaters plus a goalie to go to the tournament, this year we were much better equipped with 14 skaters plus our goalie. However, for most of the games we only had 13 skaters, since one women was up there with her daughter's team and only skated one game with us. After learning early in the week that our first game was at 3:10 PM Friday, hours before we had intended to arrive, and shifting our travel plans to make it in time, we were ready to play hockey. Much to our amazement, we actually won our first game 3-0. But since we got all of the goals in the first period we only got 4 out of the 5 possible points. (They award 1 point per period won and 2 for a game win, with half of either of those being awarded in a tie.) After some good food and a good nights rest we were ready to hit the ice again. This battle was tougher but we still came up on top, scoring the only goal of the game with 15 seconds left to play. Those last 15 seconds were sure nerve wracking, especially when I got sent out to take the face off right after the goal. Thankfully, the face of was recalled, and our number one center was rested enough to play out the game. So again we gained 4 points. Now it was time to start doing the math, with one game left it was looking pretty good for us getting into the finals, but we didn't want to count on it. Since we had a good chunk of hours between games we split up and headed off to various area attactions. Some women took in a Senior AA game, which I heard was simply amazing. A few others went to the Wild Animal Park. I joined the group which headed for the Hockey Hall of Fame. It was pretty inspiring, especially touching the Stanely Cup. Hopefully soon women will be better represented there as well as on the ice. Now it was time for the final preliminary game, I was pretty nervous. By now it was pretty apparent that the winner of this game was headed to the finals and the loser to the consolation game. Again we amazed ourselves and pulled out a 6-3 victory, which did send us to the championship game the next afternoon. So now it was time to party. I sure wish we could get that 7.3 beer down here, it was awesome. To make a long story short, our dream ended in the final game, we lost 2-0 to the Brampton Canadettes. But we did manage to keep them from scoring on our open net after we pulled our goalie. It was still an awesome weekend as far as hockey was concerned. We went home with some pretty cool medals, and just being on the blue line for an awards ceremony like that was something I'll remember for quite some time. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of all of the teams we played, nor do I know how any of the other divisions turned out. I do know that the one other team from Chicago (The Rebels - our rivals) in the other pool of our division went 1-2 in the preliminaries. But to give them some credit, they had a mostly (if not all) C team playing since their B skaters were playing in DD. Overall, it was a great weekend. The hockey was most excellent, the atmosphere was incredible. It was so neat to see so many women and girls in one place for the sole purpose of playing hockey. The only down real down points of the weekend were not directly related to hockey, so I won't go into them here. It might seem strange >that we played at a lower level, but it seems (to us at least) that >the abilities at the different levels vary greatly depending on where >you are located. Perhaps I can shed some light on this. In Ontario, the OWHA (governing body for all female hockey in the province) ranks teams into divisions by calibre as well as by age. For adults, Provincial Championships are held for divisions of D, C, B, A, and AA. (As well, there's a Senior Recreational division.) The Regional Directors of the OWHA and the other elected officers work hard every season to make sure teams are in the correct division. (A team can request re-categorization up or down; its opponents can also request that a team be assessed for re-categorization.) Hockey organizers in Ontario have been working for almost 20 years to make this system workable and fair. There is a good consensus about how to define and distinguish the different calibres. As far as I'm aware, there is nothing like this in the USA. Tournament organizers in the US rely on "self-reporting" or any other evidence they can get, to place teams fairly in divisions. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. In some places, adult teams are roughly classified as A, B, and C. A team with new skaters on it does not fit anywhere in the Ontario classification system. When I'm filling out a tournament entry form for a tournament like the Fraser Friendship Tournament in Michigan, I usually write something like "Our advanced team is at an Ontario Senior D standard." As female hockey becomes a more mature sport in the USA, I think it's important that we begin to use some classification system in order to provide fair competition, especially when we travel to play teams outside our home regions. Another pet peeve of mine is the USA Hockey age divisions for girls' hockey. They are inconsistent with the USA Hockey boys' divisions; they are also inconsistent with the CHA divisions. (now, I know that despite the subject line and first paragraph, some of you won't read this message anyway. I don't have time for people who are too busy to pay attention to the instructions and admin stuff I do, and then expect me to baby them through everything at their convenience. Life ain't always like that...) The machine is now up and pretty much functional. I'm working on the mailing list software right now, and am starting to migrate the FTP and WWW materials. The FTP and WWW materials will be mirrored on BOTH sites until the transition of the mailing lists, and then deleted from abs.apple.com, except for pointers to the new homes. If everything works right, I hope to move the first lists in about a week. We'll do this in phases so that I can make sure that things are stable before moving the next batch. If all works well, I hope to move a batch of lists every third or fourth day until everything is on the new machine. Here's my tentative schedule: Batch 1: minors, minors-scores. Batch 2: bay-area-hockey, roller-hockey-intl, hockey-list-admins, women-in-hockey, ihl Batch 3: baseball-chat, giants, giants-scores, giants-tickets. Batch 4: sharks, sharks-chat, sharks-tickets, hockey-chat. With any luck, we can be completely moved into the new home in about two weeks after I start. Worst case, it'll take three weeks to a month. Before the move, I'll send another warning with the dates of the move. During the move, the affected lists will be unavailable. When the move is complete, I'll send mail to BOTH the old and new lists os you can verify that you were moved successfully, and then delete the old list. The new machine is plaidworks.com, which is a Mac IIfx running A/UX 3.1.1. It's got 20 megs of RAM and about a gigabyte of hard disk, and runs basically the same set of tools that we run here on abs.apple.com (no surprise, huh?) only somewhat slower (anyone else remember when a IIfx was FAST? abs.apple.com is a WS95, which is a much faster machine). I'll be supporting WWW, FTP and email/listproc. No gopher at this point, unless someone can convince me otherwise, and for now, the searchable archives that have been available via WWW will be disabled until I can get some more processing horsepower. All of the data currently out in the ftp/pub/baseball and ftp/pub/hockey directories will migrate and be available in the new home, and then we'll be going in and rewriting a bunch of it (it's overdue, especially on the baseball side, but between the recent product intro we did and getting the home Internet connection up, it had to wait). Plaidworks, by the way, is connected to the home ethernet. The Internet connection is via an ethernet router box (a 900i for the neep-neep types) and a 24 hour, dedicated 28.8 modem connection to our Internet Service provider. It'll be somewhat slower a link than abs.apple.com, but since this is all coming out of my pockets, I'm sure you won't mind.... Pulling all of this together has cost a little over $2,000 to date, plus the monthly charges on the internet connection (but it's more than worth it, given our involvement in the Internet. It also FINALLY gives us completel control over the resources controlling these lists, which, since I'm going through another Re-org at Apple, turns out to be an amazingly Good Things, and we no longer have to worry about sticking with Apple's policies on system use (or hiding from them) or conflicts of interest. Hopefully, it'll let us add new, interesting services with fewer restrictions and more flexibility. As we get closer to the migrations, I'll keep you informed. In theory, except for the host-name you email to, nothing should really change. In REALITY, I hope to get as close to that as possible.... Of course, those few idiots who can't follow instructions and don't read messages like that are going to wake up one day and find everything missing, and then track me down and send nasty email messages because I didn't come to their homes and reprogram their computers for them. And finally, since this is OUR box and I don't represent anyone but myself, I can tell them exactly what I think without getting Apple in trouble for it... (bwa ha ha...) We want to thank all of you in advance for your patience in the transition. I hope we can make it worth your while to put up with it. I honestly think this will let us have a better, expanded system of mail lists and other services down the road than I could do borrowing work stuff (even if you folks DID guinea pig test software at times for me without knowing it, which was one of the justifications I used....) Okay, folks, it's time for the next phase of mailing lists to move to our new home. As of right now, I expect to make the move Saturday, probably starting in the morning. Here's how it works: I'll send out a final warning message before shutting down the lists, and flush the digests. At that point, the lists will be completely unavailable for a while. When I have them moved, I will send mail out announcing the fact. I will ALSO send out one final message to the old lists here on abs. If you get the final message and do NOT get the message from the new machine within about 24 hours, please let me know. Everything will be pretty much the same, except for two things: instead of using abs.apple.com, you'll mail to the same address on machine plaidworks.com. The archives will not be in abs.apple.com/pub/hockey/*, but in plaidworks.com/hockey/*. I'll send out more details on using the lists once I have them up. Please expect the lists to be unavailable from 9AM Saturday until sometime Sunday. If something changes and I have to delay the move, I'll let you know. The FIRST phase was done in about two hours, so hopefully things will be back much faster than I'm planning for. I had skated maybe 4 times in my life and I just wanted to learn to play. So a bunch of us that were truly beginners got together and had practice sessions where we worked on the basics (Skating drills, STOPPING, puck handling) until we were comfortable enough to play. The situation that you will run into with the guys that are very good and playing in the beginners league is that they want to be the super star. They may only be an average player at the intermediate level but in the beginners level they can be a Gretzky. This is really frustrating to a real beginner because they breeze by you like you are a cone on the ice. BUT, do not get discouraged! If you do your best and continue to practice you will get better! If you make a lot of mistakes (and you will), don't let it get to you. Try to learn from your mistakes and go on. If the guys on your team give you a hard time when you do something wrong (and you will) just remind yourself that these guys are not NHL players either. When I first started I caught a lot of flak from the guys because I was a girl (playing a MAN's sport). I even had guys give me some pretty brutal checks (even though it's a non-check league) to try to show me that I shouldn't be out there. Well it's four years later...... I am now in the advanced intermediate league. I have developed a reputation with the guys that I play with and have earned their respect. I don't have to worry about proving myself anymore. I coach a mite team during the season in addition to playing. This did not happen overnight, I play at least 3 times a week, in addition to the time I spend on the ice coaching. I am very fortunate to know a lot of guys that are very good players and want to help anyone and everyone learn the game. One word of advice, any criticism you receive you need to turn it to your benefit. Even if someone screams at you "YOU GOT CAUGHT SHORT AGAIN PLAYING DEFENSE!" or "YOU HAVE GOT TO CLEAR THE GUY OUT OF THE CREASE, DON'T LET HIM CAMPOUT!" or "YOU NEED TO BACKCHECK!", take into consideration that even if the guy is screaming at you these are things that you really should be doing. Don't let his bad attitude stand in the way of your improvement. Always try to keep a good attitude. Remember that you are out there for fun! By the way when I first started I was 27! A huge difference that I have found with the guys that play roller hockey and start playing ice hockey is that on the ice, there is a lot more quick stopping and changing directions. (In roller hockey, more turning to change direction.) So the roller hockey guys have to get used to the sudden stops that take place to change direction/momentum. I tried to cross-train by playing roller hockey but the technique for me was so different that it really fouled up my ice hockey play, so I only use roller hockey for developing my leg muscles and my skating stride. Everyone is different and YMMV. I would really like to hear how you are doing, keep us posted! Since this list goes to people in different countries, and people involved in semi-professional and professional sports organizations, I would like to get the same type of information from them as well. Since I am also learning how to play, I am also looking for the names and addresses (toll-free telephone numbers?) of mailorder sports equipment catalogs. California State Senior Hockey Championships The Hurricanes, from the Northern California Women's Hockey League, traveled to Simi Valley this month to participate in the State Finals at the Easy Street Arena. As their primary goalie, I got to participate as well, and the following is my trip and game report on two of the three games we played. >June 16 The team arrives in Simi Valley, sticks intact. After a 45 minute delay, we are able to rent two vans, and between them and two trucks are able to transport equipment and players to the Radison Hotel in Simi Valley. We show up pretty late, and after everyone gets squared away the majority of the team winds up at Denny's for a 1 am breakfast. To our horror, we discover our rivals from the NCWHL, the Oilers, sitting on the other side of the partition from us! No food is thrown, but the waiter reports to us that *both* teams were trying to convince him to put something nasty in the other team's food. One wag on our team offered the waiter $20 to put ExLax in the Oiler's desserts; a second wag immediately ups the offer to $30. No food is thrown; both teams escape unscathed. I've been plagued all week long with PMS. Life plays a nasty trick on me, and my period actually *arrives* today. This ultimately means I'm going to be consuming Advil like mad in order to play through the pain, and it means I'm going to be bloated as all hell the next day. I am NOT pleased, as it means taking the edge of my performance and there's nothing I can do about it. >June 17, Friday There is an 11 am meeting in the coach's room to discuss strategy. On the way up, 80% of the team (sans gear) manages to wedge itself into the elevator. Someone starts talking about the previous evening's exploits of one or two teammates. A few minutes later, someone else notices that it's taking an *awfully* long time to get to the fourth floor. There is some nervous giggling, and a minute later the elevator arrives. The doors refuse to open, and ten seconds later the elevator is headed back *down*, considerably faster than it went up. Half the team hastily disembarks on the ground floor, and the rest of us discover that we've just broken the elevator. 1 pm, we arrive at the rink. It appears to be a new rink (most sections are still under construction), and our locker room has neither water nor toilets, forcing us to trot the entire length of the building. Everyone on the team is incredibly nervous, despite the fact that we're facing our only familiar opponent, the Oilers. As we step onto the ice, I notice the ice in the crease is considerably discolored. At first I think someone has mixed mud or sand with the ice; after getting on my knees and feeling the ice, I discover there IS no ice. A considerable portion of the crease has melted away to expose the underlying concrete, and the rest of the crease has a very thin coating of ice. The refs report that there's nothing they can do, and the game will continue as planned. I am NOT pleased, as I've never had to deal with this kind of situation before and am stuck on the really crappy end for two periods. The Oilers play an excellent game and beat the Hurricanes 5-1. There were one or two cheeser goals that were entirely my fault, but on two of the other goals they were the result of a second or third rebound, and one is the lack of a prompt whistle on the part of the ref as the offensive player fished the puck out from under my pads and lifted it in. The Advil wears off about halfway through the second period (well before it should) and for several unhappy moments I am overcome with pain and unable to move. Fortunately, the puck is in the other end during this time... Overall, I'm happy with my performance though displeased with the cheesers that I let in. Before we leave I have several dozen words with the Zamboni driver about ice quality. He confesses to me that they're having all kinds of ice problems on this side of the rink, and that the ice on this side is actually freezing in little wavelets. I try to convince them to carefully tend the crease and get some ice on it in what time they have before the next game. As we leave, we notice that they are now holding public skate on this side, rather than carefully cutting the ice and improving it's quality. I am not impressed by this decision. After not sleeping well earlier in the week, I'm very tired after this game. So tired that I manage to fall asleep on the restaurant table and drool on my arm after eating lunch with the team. They have to shake me awake to get me back on the van. I opt to shower and crawl back into bed in an effort to pick up some energy for the evening's game at 10:45. When I wake up, I discover that the expected bloating has arrived, and I now have to deal with extreme intestinal pain every time I move suddenly. Nothing I can do but eat ever more Advil and play anyhow. I am determined to win this game. If we lose, we don't play Sunday. Conversation in the locker room focuses on what we've been able to learn about our opponents, the Shooters. Rumor has it that they are slow, but very accurate and play their positions really well. The worst news is that they tend to play very chippy and draw a lot of penalties. At this point I make the decision that NOBODY messes with me on the ice. I make the commitment to play like Ron Hextall if neccessary, and hit people if I have to in order to get them to back off. I absolutely do not want anyone running me and reinjuring my knees. The ice has not improved any at all. In fact, it appears to have gotten worse. I immediately ignore it...not having sharpened my goalie skates at all in two and a half years, and a litle concrete is hardly going to make them any duller. It does hamper my ability to get from the right post to the left post (where the worst of the concrete is), so I will have to play way deep on cross-crease slides to keep from sticking to the floor. Within minutes of the start of the game, we discover just how chippy our opponents are. After the whistle blows, one Shooter continues to hack away at my trapper. I'm on one knee covering the puck, so I warn her off of me by jabbing the butt of my stick upwards, about six inches away from her helmet. Despite the fact that it does not contact her, she immediately goes for me. Two of my defensemen hastily interpose themselves, and I stand up and scream at her that one does NOT hack at the goalie after the whistle has blown. The ref skates up and takes over; no penalties are handed out. A minute or two later, I've trapped the puck under my trapper again, this time on my stomach on the ice. A Shooter-socked skate chooses that moment to kick at my face without connecting...someone has clearly decided to play mind-games with the goalie. I look up at the offending player and snarl loudly, with one thought running through my head: if she connects with me AT ALL they will have to spend the next five minutes scraping little pieces of her up off the ice after I finish ripping her apart. Fortunately for her, she opts to head for the bench. I'm briefly a little shaken by this, but I re-commit to beat the stuffing out of anyone deciding to physically abuse the goalie. A minute or two after that, I've got the puck trapped *again*, and I can see a whole pile of Shooter socks converging at high speed on my location from only a couple feet out. I know I'm about to get dogpiled under the guise of an accident, so I shove my stick hand up to ward off falling players and *bellow* as loud as I can. Thanks to excellent acoustics at the Easy Street Arena, and my already-hoarse voice, the resulting roar sounds like a rabid rhino and the Shooter socks abruptly and rapidly reverse direction. During subsequent saves when I'm down on the ice and vulnerable, I adopt a stick-warding position, holding it up crosswise over me so players will fall on my stick first; or if someone does not appear to be braking or peeling off, holding it kendo-sword style cocked over my head so I can stab at an attacking player. This proves to be unneccesary; after my last bellow, the Shooters have apparently decided they're dealing with a psycho goalie and won't get within stick range of me. I figure this out about halfway through the game, and am greatly relieved. My own players tell me later that I scared the hell out of everyone with that bellow, and the Shooters got a little intimidated by the combination of my size, my helmet, and the way I was reacting to them. The Hurricanes have immense trouble moving the puck out of their defensive zone, and I am subject to shot after shot after shot. Somewhere in the middle of the first period, the shot clock is simply shut off. One goal is scored on me as I get stuck on a patch of concrete and am unable to get all the way over to the post. Another shot is fired in over my shoulder as I misread a play and play the pass; a third shot goes in between my ankles as I'm too exhausted to close the five-hole. The goals rack up, and sometime around the sixth goal it becomes patently obvious that we're gonna get slaughtered, so I might as well enjoy the game. This only works for about fifteen minutes. After that, it becomes a greater and greater struggle to stop shots. The Shooters are intent on racking up as high a score as they can get, and I've never been as exhausted as I am standing out there blocking shots in the third period. Five minutes into the third period I'm starting to stagger as I move out to the top of the horseshoe as the puck clears the blue line; the game already seems to me to have been going on for three hours. The Hurricanes keep sending my teammates out past me to check on me; they later report that about halfway through the third period I simply stopped responding in any rational way. One woman states that when she looked at my eyes, they were completely blank and I simply wasn't home at all. Nonetheless, I keep blocking shots as best as I can. I recognize that I'm definitely losing it when I look down at my pads...now totally covered with ice...and say, "Hey, look, I'm Frosty the Snowman!". About this time, the players from the Shooters begin coming over and patting me on the helmet, telling me I'm doing a great job. This comes as a bit of a surprise, considering how the game got started. With about five minutes left, I drop to successfully stop a shot, and discover no matter how hard I try, I *can't get back up*. I'm left on my knees in the crease, crawling about and lying down to stop shots and praying someone will ice the puck. Someone finally does, and I somehow manage to haul myself back up. The whistle finally blows, and my first instinct is to simply keel over and lie on the ice for a while. Then I realize that I'm not done yet, I've still got to go shake hands with the other team. And then I realize that I've got tears welling up in my eyes, and I'm really not sure *why*. Sure, we've lost 11-0, but given the game play, that comes as no surprise whatsoever to me. I manage to keep it mostly under control as I shake hands. I'm so tired the effort of maintaining my balance while shaking is simply too much, and I stagger and nearly fall over halfway down the line. By the time I make it to the dressing room, I'm shaking all over and starting to gulp air. A couple seconds after sitting down, I've got uncontrollable tears running down my face. I manage to get the worst of it wiped off or mixed in with all the sweat so no one notices, but one of my teammates does come over and makes sure I get some water in me...with a running clock, I've had little chance to get any water during the game. My hands are shaking so bad I have to hold on to the water bottle with both hands to keep from dropping it. My coach realizes I'll never make it with my gear to the van, and offers to carry my gear bag for me. I DO have enough energy at the end to stand up and demand to know who the *idiot* was who claimed the Shooters were "slow"... >June 18, Saturday We're now out of Sunday's game, but we still have one last game to play against the Ladyhawks. Our backup goalie has arrived, which is a good thing; I'm utterly drained, and I'm also an hour late arriving at the Arena thanks to a sidetrip that got six of our players lost off our map. Luckily the game is running half an hour late, and I've already gotten dressed in the parking lot of the hotel while waiting for my driver, so things work out fine. It's at this juncture that I request the scoring stats from the previous night's game: shots on goal ran 55 to 7. After briefly watching the shots on goal vs. the official shots on goal, it seems that the official count is running a bit low. Actual shots on goal probably ran more around 60-65, and some of my teammates come up with the number 75 for some odd reason. God knows it certainly FELT like a 75 shot game... I warn my backup about the ice and show her the concrete spots. I also give her tips on dealing with being run, and tips to keep on playing even after a goal is scored. This doesn't help, and she is *not* happy about giving up her fourth goal during the game. She hangs in there, and that game concludes with a 8-1 loss. It's been one damn long weekend, but despite losing all three games, the team is quite pleased overall with how they performed, and determined to learn to play at the same level the Shooters can play at. Spirits remain pretty high, and we have fun the remainder of the weekend. Everyone's too tired to do much besides lie around and drink. Would we do it again? You bet! stormwind hell's amazon lord of the frozen realm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 1995 01:27:30 -0400 From: TanyaW406@aol.com To: women-in-hockey@plaidworks.com Subject: Summer Hockey for Fall Players It's hard to imagine that my feet feel unfamiliar in my skate. I hadn't taken more than six weeks off from hockey in well over 10 years. There were always summer leagues--often my favorite hockey. That's because summer hockey is less serious but the people who play are better. After all, who would pull up thick padded pants and wear a plastic vest over their body on a July Sunday afternoon but the most hockey crazed ? I am one of those people. Sick for hockey. I love it. It takes my mind off my daily grind and releases me to one simple objective--put the little black thing in their net without letting them put it in ours. But the regular season also has it's politics. Wouldn't the team be better if so-and-so wasn't on it ? Why doesn't the coach put this one up front ? She's too slow to play defense. Why does it cost so much this year ? Why did we order this ugly shirt? But the summer is different. The shirts are always cheap and ugly and everybody loves them anyway--as long as they're light. You play with people you don't know too well so you wonder less why so-and-so is playing this or that position. You're there to skate and usually your impressed by how good everybody is. It is often hockey at it's best. You play to play. But this year was different. It's hard pulling my laces up now. I'm twenty pounds heavier than last year and at age 35 that hardly puts me at an advantage. For some reason, after eight months, the extra weight from the baby just doesn't seem to want to go. I pull the strings out of the top part of my pants so I can bend over and lace-up. I took a chance this year. I decided to cross the boarder and play in Rhode Island rather than with the familiar players of Massachusetts. Rhode Island was looking for experienced players. I always play with the same people so I figured I'd give this new group a chance. Little did I realize, and the friend I convinced to go with me, that these experienced players were born about five years after I started playing. How was your prom, one of them asked the other. Prom? I thought. I scanned the locker room. Oh, tell your father I'm driving you home. Mom started letting me take the car to the games. They all seemed to know each other. Their conversation flowed smoothly from kid to kid. I looked at my long-time hockey companion. She didn't seem to notice. She just continued to put her various braces on that she needed for her joints from years of use. I got on the ice and realized that I was much bigger than most of these girls. They hadn't finished growing yet. They ranged in age from 14 to 18 years old. It turns out that most of them play for a team called the Connecticut Polar Bears. I was impressed and really quite proud when the game started. These young women covered their positions brilliantly. They crossed in the neutral zone, left pretty drop passes and began to read the play well in advance. I thought how such a high level of play never existed when I was the age of these girls. Women's hockey was just on its third season in New England then. When I got on the ice I was frustratingly slower and winded. I actually hurt the team when I was playing--something that never happened to me before in the 22 years I've played. I could feel their youthful frustration when I lobbed my body over the boards to play the third shift. I had a romantic notion that pregnancy and age would not be enough to put me at any significant disadvantage to children who just learned to drive. But like Nadia, I got the painful lesson that simple God given youth is more effective than years of experience. One little midget gave me a fierce glare as she came down the ice on the left side. Somehow, despite my armor of equipment, she seemed to know I was old and wounded. She was so much smaller than me. She dazzled her stick back and forth in an attempt to get past me. I laughed to myself. I have a very effective poke-check, or so I thought. But to my horror, after a less-than- impressive move, she was on the other side of me. Apparently, along the way, I had lost my sense of timing as well. I have played in Europe, Canada, Switzerland and skated with what might be considered the best women hockey players in the world. I have admired them when playing against them but never felt intimidated. Now, before a group of kids, I found my confidence gone. I couldn't skate as fast, couldn't last as long and couldn't even use the tools I'd developed over the years against them. I wondered if it were really time to quit. Then one of the little pests flew past me toward our net. She spun her body to face the puck when I leaned my glove on the inside of her shoulder. It sent her butt-end (not referring to her stick) down the ice. I suddenly realized that I still possessed one advantage--strength and the knowledge of when and how to use it. Moments later I was against the boards with one of them. These creatures are enthusiastic, mind-you. Her stick was thrashing away when I calmly pressed my 200 pound body against her. He stick's movement slowed--probably from lack of oxygen. I moved the puck away from her with the toe of my blade and passed it to a flying team-mate. We lost that particular game 7-6. I think I was on the ice for three of the goals against us and on for one goal for us. (Not that I had much to do with that goal.) In fact, our team hasn't won a single game. Yet, when the game was over I got the same feeling I've been getting every time I step off the ice since I was thirteen. I felt great. Not my body or even my attitude. It's literally as if my spirits are lifted by playing this game. Even in the face of humiliation I felt great. I know now that I don't have to be the best or even one of the best to love to play. I don't have to be well known in the locker-room or even liked. It's the game itself that has incredible value for me. Granted I don't like the idea of children who could easily be my daughters giving me a snare and then busting past me. But there is still some optimism in me. Maybe by August this little baby pouch will shrink and I'll be able to lace my skates with my pants tied fully against my waist. Maybe my timing will come back. Maybe these old skills I've developed will once again be effective--especially against these youthful, inexperienced speedsters. Oh, I'm no longer a romantic. My seasons are numbered. I have my referee patch and I intend to keep it current. There will be a passage soon, I'm afraid. But, until then, if you ever happen across some old rink this summer on a Sunday afternoon on Route 140 in Rhode Island, stop by. You'll get to see some young women play some fantastic hockey. But if you see one of them try a showy move to get past the biggest and slowest one on the ice, give her a secret cheer. After all, even these young girls will be middle-aged mothers some day. It all started when we took Will to a Sharks game. Well, I guess it started earlier... last year, when the Sharks made the second round of the playoffs, and were much pictured in the paper. Will, then 4, was fascinated, and I promised to take him to see a Sharks game this year. The lockout intervened, but finally, just at the end of the season, we saw the Sharks-Blues game. Our dear Sharks lost, but Will was completely hooked, and I had a pretty good time myself. The Sharks made the playoffs again, and we suddenly found ourselves hockey fans. But Will really, really wanted to *play* hockey. So I got him some inline skates. Then they looked like so much fun that I got myself some inline skates, and sure enough, they *were* fun. I'd skate around with Will, mostly practising crossovers, skating backwards and turning around from forwards to backwards. I got some boys down the street to give me some tips. Suffering hockey withdrawal at the end of the season, we went to a Rhinos (roller hockey) game. It was a kick, cheap too, and you got to skate around on the Sport Court afterwards. I got Will a cheapie stick and ball, and let him play around. I signed him up for a hockey clinic given by the Rhinos at the end of the summer. Yesterday I got a call from the woman in charge of the clinic- they were having a clinic that day, and it was undersubscribed, and did Will want to go for free? I said yes, of course, packed up all our stuff on the tandem, and off we rode to San Jose, about an hour away. We were having guests that night, and the house was a mess, but who's going to clean up the house when they can play hockey? We got there, and they suited up Will with all the hockey gear. At 5, he was the youngest kid there, and he looked awfully cute, and so proud, in all his stuff. They started with some skating and puckhandling drills. I watched for a while, but then I figured I'd put on my own skates and skate around a bit in the parking lot. The organizer told me I should go and join the clinic too! I had never held a hockey stick before, but total ineptitude and looking a fool don't scare me, so out I went. At 39 I was a bit overage (the clinic was for 5-12 year olds), but I figured I'd give it a go. The instructor/student ratio was great; three Rhinos to eleven kids and one middle-aged housewife. We did shooting drills, and scrimmaged three on three, with the Rhinos acting as goalkeepers and intervening when necessary. The Rhinos were sweet, and good instructors. I was terrible, of course. I was slow. I couldn't get my wrist shot to get off the rink. When we were playing a chasing game, I couldn't catch the little kid skating with a puck, even though I didn't have a puck. In the scrimmage, I was no asset to my team. I fell down when I tried to turn. I had a great time, and I want to play hockey. Is this really stupid? I read the post from the new mom, about playing hockey with teenagers young enough to be her daughters. Look at the trouble she had, and I have all of her disadvantages and lack her advantage of experience. I don't expect that I'd ever be good, although I'd undoubtedly improve a good deal. I just want to play. I don't imagine it's so easy to find a pick-up game for ancient women like me, but are there leagues? We're going back to the original clinic Will signed up for, and the organizer promised that I could skate again too. -- Anne Paulson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 1995 11:12:13 -0700 From: amazon@kisio.esd.sgi.com (Stormwind) To: Multiple recipients of list , Subject: Re: Too old? The first time I skated with a stick, it was nigh onto impossible. But ... I stuck with it and kept trying, and now I coordinate hockey games most every weekend for all the kids - and I play with them. The other mothers love me for it, because they get to dump their kids off for 2-3 hours on Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon. I love it, because it gives me the chance to play. The kids must enjoy coming and playing with me, because they keep coming back! We average anywhere from 6-25 people there each time. There's one girl who sometimes comes, but the rest are boys age 5-17. Another mom has just recently started playing with us too - I could tell when she was watching us that she really wanted to play, even though she knew nothing about hockey, so I finally talked her into trying it. So, if you can't find pick-up games to get into, start your own! Word gets around pretty good about when and where we play. You'd think that with the wide age range of kids, we'd have problems with some getting hurt. But for the most part, the older guys are real good about giving the younger ones a chance - in fact, often I'll see them feed the puck to a young one at the net even though they've got a great shot themselves. What else should I look out for? I think the most important thing is to make sure that the skates are comfortable. If it means paying a little more, I think it's definitely worth it. My boyfriend purchased a cheaper pair from Canadian Tire for about $80 or so, and didn't end up wearing them because they hurt his feet so much. The wheels and bearings were not of the best quality either. He was kicking himself that he didn't pay a little more and end up with something that he'd actually be able to use, and something that would last. I am very happy with the Inline skates that I have. They are very durable, offer a lot of support, have good bearings, and are very comfortable. I think those are probably the most important things to look for. The pair that I have are made by Bauer (I don't know the model number, but the boot is the same as the Bauer 2000 hockey skates and they have a Power-clip on the inner side for added protection and durability). They are quite expensive (although luckily I received a complimentary pair from Bauer), but I would say they are well worth the price. I've had them for three years, and they are still in great condition. They are very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time (more than a few hours), and for playing roller-hockey games which tend to involve a lot of twisting and turning. Also, if you have an old pair of hockey skates that you really like, you might be able to find a sports store that will install a set of wheels on your old hockey skates. In summary, I'd say that it's important to get something that's comfortable enough that you'll actually be able to wear. Also, make sure that the bearings are of good quality and that the wheels spin freely. If you don't plan to use the skates very much, then it's probably not worthwhile paying the extra money to get a good pair, but if you do plan to use them a lot, then I would recommend paying more. Also, there is a very good guide to buying Inline Skates on the world wide web. It's located at URL: http://www.skatefaq.com/skate.3.1.html If you don't have a web browser, send me mail, and I'll send you a text copy of the article. Recently, we had just completed our registration, and the number of registrants has gone done quite significantly from last year (about 60% less). I believe there are many factors including poor coaching (although you can only criticize coaching to a certain extent, since we all are volunteers), a significant raise in registration fees, and the fact that most of the girls who were in our association also played Ringette, and when forced to make a decision this year, decided to play Ringette instead of hockey. Anyways, I was wondering if I could pool this list's collective minds, and obtain some ideas of promoting girls ice hockey in order to boost registration numbers. Perhaps you could have some sort of a one-day clinic to introduce the sport to new players (and as a refresher for the returning players). This is what the Scarborough Girls' Hockey League does at the beginning of each season to spark some interest and to attract new players. They had clinics for lots of different skill levels so that the newer players wouldn't get intimidated or discouraged. The focus was on having fun, and it's a great opportunity for girls to find out how great the sport really is, without having to commit. I'm not sure how you would go about promoting such an event, and I'm not sure that it would help too much since it seems that some of the girls have left because of Ringette, but it might be a start. They had some of the members on the National team leading the clinics, so that may have been appealing to the girls too. I believe in the long term, the best way to promote is through exposure. The more young girls see other girls or women in the game the more they become interested and the more pressure they put on their parents to allow them to join the game. The attitude that females do not belong in the game is not as prevalent as it was say 15 years ago, but it is still there never the less. As coach of a Senior Female team and Referee in Chief of our local minor hockey association I have found that getting the players involved in both refereeing and coaching the minor hockey players helps the exposure of women in the game, allows the young girls who come out to their brothers games to see that there are other girls interested and is also alot of fun for the players on our team. Last year I had six players refereeing and four coaching with the Initiation Program at the begining level. Some of the referees have been to the Provincial and National Winter Games and the coaches are getting even more involved this year. I would caution not to get involved with the attitude that women should only coach women and girls and men should only coach men or boys. Fortunatly this way of thinking is not present with our team and most of our association but I have seen it in the past in other areas. By all means coach or referee where you feel most comfortable whether it is with the boys or the girls but don't be restricted to one or the other. This only promotes an "us against them" attitude which is confrontational and does nothing to promote the game for girls and women. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 95 16:27:57 EDT From: cathy@aloft.att.com (c.moeller) To: women-in-hockey@plaidworks.com Subject: Re: GIRLS HOCKEY In search of: Girls Hockey team looking for other teams to play within the eastern PA area. Or, organize car pools to clinics at other rinks. Get info to girls through their brothers that are playing on teams. Our team parents are concerned about price and amount of time per week so keep that in mind. Some school systems may allow you to distribute info. Put posters up at your local rinks. I have a 15 yr. old daughter that just started playing ice hockey last year. The rink she always skates at held an all girl's clinic. I believe it was 8 weeks with 3 coaches (1 was for the goalies). The rink wanted to see if there was enough interested to start an all girl's league. Not everyone from the clinic joined the girl's league but it provided a good base for the team. Those that were really interested in hockey also attended summer camps held at local rinks. It was 5 days straight - 4 hrs ice time, dry land training, videos, etc. each day. These types of clinics and camps are usually well worth it. Some of the girls that joined the team were sisters of boys that played on the ice rink teams. My daughter is continuously attending some sort of clinic at various rinks. We just finished a power skating clinic 8 Saturdays in Morristown NJ which is 1 hr. 15 mins away from home. My daughter was also able to join a Junior Varsity (checking) team that previously only consisted of boys. Her team mates were great. There were no problems with them accepting her on the team. Of course she wasn't a whimp either. She shocked the other teams they played however. Only one of the other teams they played had girls. In one of the games she took a hard check, checked him backed, he checked her, and eventually the two of them both got penalties. While in the penalty box, he saw she was a girl and said "You're a girl!". She said "Ya, so o o!" There was once a parent in the crowd who said, "girls don't belong in this sport, especially on a boys team". I am glad I didn't hear that directly or I definitely would have expressed my opinion. We are now looking into colleges that have on-premise ice rinks and a girls hockey team. She is interested in sports medicine, physical therapy, sports training. She also loves art (painting) and piano. If anyone has recommendations on any colleges, I'd appreciate it. Ringette was invented over 26 years ago by a recreation programmer who wanted a great game for girls - it is a "non-contact" game (just like basketball, right?) The game is played with skates on ice, five on five plus a goalie. The game is a combination of hockey, basketball and soccer. Players wear full equipment very similar to ice hockey, except most teams prefer the full leg cooperal as opposed to hockey pants and socks. Basic play starts with a "free pass" where Team A has posession of the ring (usually a blue rubber ring, approximately 1" thick and 4 or 5" wide in diameter) the player has 5 seconds to make a pass from inside one half of one of the five circle to someone on the outside. Players use a straight stick much like a blade-less hockey stick. Players can not carry the ring from end to end as the ring must be passed at each blue line. This game emphasizes teamwork, speed, finness and ring control. It is an excellent way to develop skating skills for the beginning skater. Ringette has been in the Canada Winter Games, has held National Championships for over 17 years and has held three World Championships. The last World championships were held in Minnesota in April 1994. Approximatley 60,000 people (some men) play in Canada with a growing number of countries participating every year. In fact the last World championships were won by the Finnish national team! And that is a very short synopsis of what ringette is. I've never bought a kit before, I always have bought my peices of equipment seperately. As a matter of fact my shoulder pads are not women's. All the women's shoulder pads I came across were to flimsy. (I play in a men's league and take some monster hits.) The problem with the pants you describe was really not a problem for me as my pants are belted. If you used suspenders instead I don't see it being a problem either. Your hockey pants don't have cinch in the waiste like a pair of bluejeans, as long as they are comfortable, the pads are positioned on your body correctly and stay in place, you are set to go. (By the way, I wear a Men's Small in CCM Supra pants) In some brands I take a men's medium in pants due to the length more than anything else. The biggest problem I had in fitting equipment really was my shoulder pads. I needed the extra protection but had to accomodate my bust. (I'm not huge, just not flat.) My solution was most of the long line shoulder pads that reached down to the top of my pants work great. Having just returned from goalie camp in Toronto, I was also visiting various stores attempting to buy players kit for my girlfriend. Anyway, there are some major, obvious, differences in the body shapes of the two sexes, and whereas I found a pair of Jofa shoulder pads for women, I had great trouble trying to explain that women's hips can be quite alot larger than their waist size. The outcome being that I ended up buying pants which were of a certain model (CCM i think), which were able to expand in the right places (ie they didn't have awkward bits of plastic). The final solution seems to work, but I thought I'd ask if any of you had had similar problems when buying kit - I figured the initial problems were because the UK is a relative hockey backwater, but to come across similar troubles in Canada surprised me. I had previously asked for opinions about it. I'm 4/5 of the way through it, tonight is the last night. The seniors camp is at night, 2 hours of ice a night with a couple of off-ice sessions. I was a bit worried about surviving 2 hours of ice, and what level the camp would be. Well, I've survived 4 days so far. It's challenging and tiring, but they try to vary it enough so you work different things. You work more on skills than endurance. The women range in skill, but on the average its women who've been skating for a few years. Karen Kay is the head coach, she coaches at UNH and also coaches the US national women's team. Kush Sidhu was there the first day, but then had to fly home. The assistant coaches are members of the US National Team, and its exciting to watch them skate! They are definately head and shoulders about most of us in skills. Kelly Dyer is the goalie coach, and she can outskate most of us even in her pads! I've really enjoyed seeing the level of the national team, and it's also motivating being coached by all women. That doesn't happen often, at least around here (mich). Overall, I would highly recommend this camp. It's highly organized, lots of different drills, power-skating exercises, and a lot of one-on-one help too. They also throw in some quick games for a change of pace. We played soccer at the end of practice last night, no sticks, with a soccer-like ball. I think it was supposed to follow through on the quick-feet notion, but it was a fun change of pace. Things like that help you forget quite how long you're on the ice for, at least until you're done. Marc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Women's North American Roller Hockey Championships I just returned from competing in the North American Roller Hockey Championships (NARCh) which were held in St Louis this past weekend. There were 10 teams in the women's division. I played for the Toronto Tornadoes. There were also 10 different men's/boys' divisions in the championships. Here is the description of the teams in the women's division as per the official NARCh program: Group A TEAM LOCATION QUALIFICATIONS San Diego Seahawks San Diego, CA California State Champions, 2nd Toronto Tornadoes Toronto, ON 1994 World Ice Hockey Champions *** Austin Storm Austin, TX 1995 USAC National Championships, 3rd Fast Forward Madison, WI 1994 Narch National Championships, 2nd MedalCross Checkers Chicago, IL 1994 Narch National Champions *** (see above) I don't know where they got that from ... there were only 3 of us from Team Canada!!! There was an 8 goal mercy rule in effect. This meant that as soon as one team was leading by 8 goals, the game was called: Toronto Tornadoes 8 --- Chicago Cross Checkers 0 Toronto Tornadoes 8 --- Fast Forward 0 Toronto Tornadoes 5 --- Texas Storm 0 Toronto Tornadoes 7 --- San Diego Seahawks 1 * Toronto Tornadoes 8 --- Detroit Blades 0 (medal round) Toronto Tornadoes 2 --- Chicks with Sticks 3 (medal round) Here are the scores for all other teams (sorry, I am missing quite a few): Friday, August 18th San Diego Sea Hawks 3 --- Texas Storm 0 AKS She Devils 3 --- Tour Bandits 0 Detroit Blades 3 --- Toronto Rockets 0 Fast Forward 4 --- Chicago Cross Checkers 0 Saturday, August 19th San Diego Sea Hawks 3 --- Fast Forward 1 Chicks with Sticks 3 --- Detroit Blades 1 * Chicks with Sticks 3 --- AKS She Devils 4 Toronto Rockets 0 --- Tour Bandits 1 Sunday, August 20th AKS She Devils 1 --- Detroit Blades 1 Chicago Cross Checkers 0 --- Texas Storm 0 Chicks with Sticks 6 --- Toronto Rockets 2 Chicago Cross Checkers ? --- San Diego Sea Hawks ? These games were counted in the medal round results, according to tournament rules. The Chicago Chicks with Sticks managed only 5 shots on our goal, but somehow ended up beating us by a score of 3-2 to claim the gold medal. Their goalie played amazingly!! She did everything but stand on her head to lead her team to the victory. Unfortunately our goalie didn't have her best game. :-( Another excuse :-) that I can think of (this is the normal reaction to a loss, eh!) for our loss is that we really should have taken more players to the tournament. We had an injury so that left us with only 2 subs. Our last game of the round robin was at 6:00pm, the semi-final was at 7:00pm, and the final was at 8:00pm! Wow, talk about tiring!! :-) Who set up that schedule?! ;-) This was a very disappointing loss for us, needless to say, but the overall experience was very rewarding. Like for example I got to see the St Louis Arch! :-) But seriously, it was very exciting for me because this was my first experience playing in an organized roller hockey game. It was also nice to meet some of the players on the other teams and to see so many women having a lot of fun playing a great sport! Hopefully this tournament will generate more interest in women's roller hockey. It sure was a lot of fun, and it would be great to see interest in the sport increase. Wouldn't that be super if there could be 10 women's/ girls' divisions, ranging from Squirt to Senior, just like with the men's roller hockey! Andria Hunter P.S. The other 2 members of Team Canada (Ice Hockey) who played for our team this past weekend were: Cheryl Pounder (defence) and Lesley Reddon (goalie). In case you were wondering, no, Lesley was not the goalie who played for us in the final. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 1995 23:54:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Chuck Goolsbee To: women-in-hockey@plaidworks.com Subject: Seattle Wings Women's Hockey 1995 The Seattle Wings Women's Hockey Club would like to announce the beginning of their 1995 season and invite all interested Puget Sound area women to participate. I don't know too many details about this misfortune. I just know that she was promoting women's hockey for the OWHA (Ontario Women's Hockey Association) at a hockey camp in Northern Ontario. She suddenly became very sick and they had to take her to the hospital. She and the 3 month old child which she was carrying passed away within a day. She apparently had some kind of a brain virus, but they'll know better after the autopsy has been confirmed. It's very sad, as she leaves behind a husband and a young child. Three women on my hockey team went to her funeral. It was very emotional for everyone because she really was a great person. Gold Medal Game: Red Wings vs. Vikings Great game! With 23 seconds left in the first period of overtime, Geraldine Heany fought her way from just before the blue line with Vikings hanging all over, she was able to handle the ball around the poke-checking diving goalie and into the open net.
