However, there is a very prommising young woman, Sarah Puryear, currently playing on a boy's midget team who desperately needs some advice. I hope someone on this list can help her out. Sarah also plays on my adult men's rec team. She is our star player (at 16 years old) and I told her I would write on her behalf since she is without internet access. Sarah recently returned from a USA Hockey developmental camp in Colorado Springs. She said that after the first day, she was told she was the number two pick to go to Lake Placid. Unfortuneately, after the camp was over, she was told she would not go to Lake Placid because her play was too timid. Not having ever played with women before (and not having anyone in Houston to give her advice) Sarah had been afraid of being too physical (and she can be VERY physical) and unfortunatly was percieved as timid. (I have to wonder, why no one mentioned this to her DURING the camp, since it was supposed to be instructional!?!) Beyond the disappointment of not advancing this year, Sarah is most concerned about her ability to attract a College scholarship. Apparently, she is a gifted student but will need money to go to college out of state. I would like information on two items: 1. What are the BEST camps available this summer? Obviously, travel expenses are an issue since we are in Texas; Sarah will probably only be able to afford one or two camps at best. She needs experience and good coaching on playing the women's game. 2. What should Sarah be doing if she wants to play hockey on a college scholarship? Most of us don't even know what colleges offer women's hockey as a program, much less how to get on a team. Many thanks for any and all advice. No piece of information is insignificant--trust me, we need all the help we can get. George Crow runs an excellent two week camp at Dartmouth College, he is the coach, but I suspect it is sold out and it does cost $1000. There is the Blue Hills Camp run by former harvard coach John Dooley at the Williston-Northampton school in Easthampton MA. Indeed most of the colleges have camps. Another option is to try out this summer for the Hockey Night in Boston tournament on the Mid-West team. The organizer of the team is Bill Nook and the try-outs will be in Ann Arbour June 12-18. The HNIB Boston office is at 508-682-2425. Gary Demopolous organizes the girls program. This tournament is attended by almost all the college coaches. As far as calibre goes, most of the women's teams in this area are D, DD or C. I have heard that there maybe a team from Northern California coming and we would encourage anyone else interested in joining us. Also, there was a question earlier about a women's tournament in Las Vegas at Christmas time. This is the story I have heard... The tournament is organized by David Cohen and his company. There was a tournament planned for last Christmas, but the women's portion was postponed. The men's teams responded quickly and filled up, while the women were slow in responding, so they turned the ice time over to more men's teams and planned a women's tournament in March instead. The So. Cal Rays signed up for the March tourney, but was the only women's team to get their money in by the deadline. We were given the choice of not playing or playing against the men. We decided to play the men. It was a great tournament anyway and good experience for the team. I will see if I can get information on the tourney for this December and contact names and numbers for Cohen. I would encourage any team to join in and look forward to see you in Las Vegas. Women's hockey in Canada is also well established. Maureen Angelini angelini@xtdl.com (Maureen L. Angelini) +++++++++++++++++++++++++ The elusive "hockey scholarship" may or may not be an option. Only a few(4) colleges ahve them and they are only for absolute stars. The majority of the colleges in the ECAC and all of those in the alliance do not. What they do have is need based financial aid. This is what I administer here at Deerfield. You pay what you can afford, based on the college's formula. The combination of academic and athletic(hockey) skills are what get you admitted! The Ivy league, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Brown have NO athletic scholarships. Neither do Colby, or St. Lawrence. They have need based aid. The same is true of the alliance schools; Bowdoin, Middlebury, Wesleyan, Amherst, Williams, RIT. For a list of schools, see andria hunters home page and follow the women's university hockey links. One option would be to look at her spending a year or two in a new englang boarding school where she would play in the backyard of the colleges. If this is of interest let me know. For example, the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin (Madison) have good teams and have been club teams for several years now, but as of the next hockey season will be starting as a Varsity team. These schools that are just starting out their programs will be looking for very talented girls - so that they can attract fans for the long run (vs. having people come out and see some fairly average players and not taking it seriously...). I don't know if going to the midwest is something she'll be interested in, but she could always transfer once she gets her name out there.... The tournament is in March (choice of weekends) and runs from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon. There is a three game minimum plus play offs. The Women's Division states that the abiblity level should range from novice to lower intermediate. It seems like a first class tournament and I believe it is organized by what I understand as a business that sets up tournaments all over (I received info on a tourny in Arizona in May as well) There is a choice of accomodations and depending on that the price per player ranges between $199 to $275 U.S.(Dbl occupancy), and Non-playing Guest is $170 (Dbl. occupancy, hotel only). The whole weekend would not be a cheap one. For us Canadians it would run us about $358 Cdn. per player for hotel and ice, plus travel expenses etc... Ede) Subject: League Set Up.. I too would like information regarding league set up. Specifically, how different divisions are formed etc.. Let me explain our situation: Thunder Bay, Ontario has had a womens league since 1989. It has been steadily growing and recently it has been rapidly growing. We had 4 senior teams in 1994-95 season and 6 in the 1995-96 season and are anticipating at least 8-10 teams for the coming 1996-97 season. Where the problem lies is two fold. The first is that there is a diversity in the skill level of the teams in the league. There are two experienced teams (B) in our league, there are three intermediate teams (C) and then 1 (2 this coming season) beginner teams (D). The B & C teams are competitive with each other but the beginner D team is barely competitive with the C teams and not at all with the B teams. The second problem lies within the Region's Representative Teams. Each year there are try outs and a Senior Representative Team is formed to represent our region at the Provincials. This team is in addition to Players house league team. They practice early Sunday morning and play exhibition games against the Midget Rep Team. The Rep. teams players are concerned that they do not get enough time together to gel and to be competitive at the Provincials since they do not play together regularly all year. The proposal before the Executive is to divide up the league into two divisions. They are planning on allowing the Midget Representative Team to join the Senior league as a house team as well as to have the Senior Rep. Team join our league as a house team as well. This would create an 'elite' league of the two Rep. teams and the two current B teams (assuming they would still be B teams without the Rep. players). The second league would be of low calibre. Point of Interest: the Executive Members elected to represent the Senior Division are all on the Senior Rep. Team and wish to play together. As a member of the remaining C teams, we are very concerned about this move for a number of reasons. The first concern is that since the Senior Prov. Rep team is made up of players from ALL of the house league teams, the removal of these players would reduce the calibre of play and competitiveness for the remaining teams. This would not only affect our league play but would affect our competitiveness in out of town tournaments. The C teams would only be playing the D teams and will not be challenged and will not improve like they could playing the B teams. We are also concerned about the nature of the Representative Team and how it will be formed in the future. There are many C team players that are very close to being able to play on the Rep. team but need one maybe two more years experience in the league but without these better players to 'play up to' and learn from, the progress will be severely impeded. We are also concerned that since the Rep. team will be like a house league team, it will (and to a degree already is) become a click that is near impossible to penetrate in the future (in theory there are to be try outs each year). Further, there are many of us the enjoy our House League team so much that we want to play with these ladies during the regular season but also aspire to represent our Region at the Provincials. The Executive proposed that there would be a few cross over (token)games where the two divisions would play each other. Realistically, this would serve to prove their point regarding the diversity of skill level, the remaining teams (without their former Players that are now Rep. Team Players) would not be competitive against a Rep. Team and the games would be blow outs. A team cannot be thrown into high calibre hockey once playing all year in low/medium calibre hockey. We are desperately looking for advice or comments on how to come to a resolution of the current problems of our league. Last season was such an excellent season we would be so disappointed to have our league altered in such a detrimental way (in our opinion)that would not only diminish the level of enjoyment but also potentially deter growth in the league. The Executive postponed its decision until early July regarding these matters and we are trying to come up with a feasible compromise. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter? Any and all would be welcomed.. I have the benefit of playing in , what I fell is a very well run, women's league. I have played previously in Buffalo, NY and Washington D.C. The Northern California Women's Hockey League (NCWHL) was formed in San Francisco 1993 by Theresa Green with four teams. The non-checking league plays all year long in two seasons. In the first year matched lines were used. Today the league has three divisions beginner, intermediate and advance. Beginner and intermediate have pratices and games while the advance has games only. There are currently four teams in the intermediate and advance, don't know the current beginner number but at least two. Each person purchases a home and away jersey and sock set for their division. You keep this jersey and number for as long as you stay in that division, keeps the costs down. Each game the teams are designated home or away. Each season, captains or league reps get together and form the new teams with the goal of keeping the teams as even as possible. I have been playing for 2.5 years now and have played with almost everyperson in my division. This keeps the league competive yet fun. Most of us have careers to think about and don't want a injury to jepodize that. Players can substitute from the lower division when needed. The games are played at four or five different rinks throughout the area in a range of approx 50 miles, ice times are Sunday early evening and Thursday night, Not bad! With the introduction of the Sharks new rinks are being built. As you can see it is sort of a house league without having a house. Adminstration of the League: USA hockey is mandatory in our league for insurance reasons, it is a pretty good deal $20 each for all year and a magazine. The magazine has some good articles and has ads from stores all over the county and canada. Many of our players order from these stores due to the high prices of hockey stuff in California. Also many tournaments we play in require it. The league is run by the players volunteering for different positions. Someone makes sure we have refs and someone makes sure we have scorers (we pay $10 for scorers). Each year new elections are held. This is a league for women run by women. Doing this we keep our cost lower than the men's leagues. We hold "give try hockey" events twice year. Advertisements are placed in the newpapers on a regular basis (thats were I found out about the league). Many women play both in our league and the men's league. USA hockey in our area is probably more supported by the women's league. We do need to remind them of that. We play in tournaments by starting with a core team (usally the season winner) and add players as needed from the other teams. We also play teams from other areas, mainly from Southern California (LA). Another source of information is the $15 yearly subscription to Women's hockey network P.O. We don't have any organization and are scattered through the varuous men's leagues, so it is hard to get a good count. I think that fielding a team in the men's league here runs about $2200 for a 13 person team for a 12 game season. Most ice here runs between $10 and $15 an hour per person and goalies are almost always free. I play in a house novice league, so the figures aren't based on any knowledge of the Houston Mens League. On the subject of what is available out there..... Are there any women on this list living in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, or San Antonio (TEXAS) areas? I have been thinking that I would like to play on a women's team for a change and have two proposals.... 1) we could get together and buy ice for a women's drop-ins in one of the above cities or Houston. I think I might be able to scrap together a team of women from Houston. 2) if you have a women's team currently travelling, I am interested in going to a women's tounament. So if you could use a novice level wing, I am your person. --Lea Sanford Houston, TX ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 1996 13:12:45 -0400 From: BLACKTHORN@aol.com Subject: Now its a matter of pride Rec. Currently, there are no established women's leagues (to my knowledge), but we are putting one together for the fall. One of the (two) local rinks put together a 10 week beginners womens hockey session, and we have had about 20-25 women each week of varying skill levels. Since many of us FL residents have moved down from colder climates, several of the women have played at the college or high school level. Others had never laced up a pair of hockey skates. I'm not sure how the costs compare to men's hockey, but the problem in FL is a growing interest in hockey, which leads to high demand for ice time. We should have two more rinks opening in the next 18 months, which should help the situation. The men's teams seem pretty open to letting women play, there just aren't two many women who feel comfortable playing in the mens leagues. If anyone in the Tampa/St Pete FL area is interested in joining us, please email me to get in touch! It would be very enlightening to see the numbers of female players in each province divided into those who play female hockey and those who play integrated hockey. I know that a very high majority of the female players in Ontario play female hockey, and it would be interesting to see whether this trend were consistent in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Another data point with exciting implications, from the other side of the border: in Minnesota last season, there were more female teams in the 12&under division, than in either the 15&under division or the 19&under division. To me that has lots of promise for the future of our sport, and shows that more little girls play, when they have the chance to play on girls' teams. I guess that sounded high to me because I've only played in roller hockey leagues so far, and the most expensive one I know of is $950/team. (We're definitely not playing the cheapest sport around!) As a side-note, I'm wondering how many people play rollerhockey in addition to ice hockey. (That's how I got started in ice hockey actually.) Do you find that it helps or detracts from your ice hockey game? For me, roller hockey has been the only way I could learn how to play hockey until I could get ice time. While it doesn't allow you to learn how to stop on ice, I picked up a lot of stickhandling, general skating skills, and hockey strategy while playing roller hockey. I would definitely recommend it for those of you who can't find an ice rink close enough to home, or who can't find a beginner's team that will take you. It will give you a head start (especially since you can play it off-season). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jul 1996 18:28:26 -0700 From: Cindy Dayley & Zoe Harris Subject: Women's and Girl's tournments I have been asked by the USA western regional women's and girl's director to help put a list together of all the US & Canadian tournments. My 10-year-old daughter was asked by her ice hockey coach to join a roller hockey league that he was organizing at a local indoor raquet club. It's set up as a house league and has worked out very well for Jessica even though she is the only girl in the league. She is the leading scorer on her team and has really influenced the style of play on her team which is now passing very effectively to set up scoring plays (something you don't see too often with a beginner's boys age 8-10 roller hockey team) and leads its division. She is attending a summer girls' ice hockey clinic every Monday night here in Philly and then plays in her roller hockey league every Tuesday night. Then, on top of that, she plays street hockey as an elective activity with the boys at her summer day camp. So Jessica is really getting her fill of hockey (ice, roller and street) this summer! She is living out her hockey summer dream. Just wondering whether there are other girls, women on the list who are getting involved in roller hockey which is really taking off as a new sport in the Philadelphia region. However in the age of electronics, I would like to add email contacts to all of my own university listings. If you have an email address for a coach or other contact, I would appreciate sending it to me at the address below. It doesn't necessarily have to be the coach or administrator, another reliable person can be substituted. This is especially useful for all the club teams out there, for whom communication is sometimes difficult. Not to sound like an ad, but our tryouts begin at the end of this month (August) and our team is looking for players who preferably have some hockey experience, as we are in the Senior AA division. The only other requirement is you must be 18 years old or more. We are a competitive team however we do enjoy our "fun" times together. We usually go to two tournaments per season, one in Kamloops or Burnaby, BC in November and one at the end of the season in Seattle, Washington in April. I, personally, have a whole lot of pride in our team and I look forward to our season each year with much anxiety. Our team, though, it changes through yearly tryouts, is 5 years old and I am one of the veterans. If you know of anyone looking for a team or you are interested in coming out, please feel free to contact me or our coach, Frank Schulz, via this e-mail address. I am very confused about the timing of the winter olympics, or is it the Olympics in general? There was Albertville (and Barcelona) in '92, so then there was Lillehammer(sp.?) in '94. Ok, why is that? Then the next Winter Games are '98 Nagano. So, when will the next winter olympics after Nagano be? And what is the theory behind the timing of the games, I've been trying to figure this one out. So does this mean, with Sydney in 2000, that there will be winter games in that year also, thus starting the new cycle w/ summer games occuring two years later? My point about the winter Olympics was concerning the women's national team. (yeah, i finally get on subject!) I have read articles that have made it sound like Team USA's women's team has already been picked for '98. Is this true? Why would they choose teams so far in advance (well, maybe a year and a half) when there were teams and individuals who did not qualify to compete in Atlanta until almost a month before it began. I am obviously confused about how these things work, I think I may have the timing of the games figured though. But how about the US women's team- what is up with that? Anything would help! Heather ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Aug 96 08:47 EDT From: "Nate.Ewell" Subject: winter olympics I think I can clear this up: After the 1992 Olympics, the IOC decided to stagger the Winter and Summer Games to make smaller lulls between Olympics, thus keeping them in the public eye longer, etc. So the Winter Games were played after two years in 1994 and will continue every four years from now on (1998, 2002, etc.) as will the Summer Games (1996, 2000, etc.) As for women's hockey, USA Hockey has a pool of players from which it will select the 1998 Olympic team, but the team hasn't been picked yet. In fact, I don't believe a team has been picked yet for the 1997 World Championships. The tournament was set up into two pools. All teams from Pool A played every team in Pool B as a part of the preliminary round action. The Toronto Tornadoes and Team Rollerblade were is Pool A. The Northern California team (Dry Ice Fury) was in Pool B. Both the Toronto Tornadoes and Team Rollerblade beat every team in Pool B. The semi's consisted of the top two teams from their respective pool playing each other. Unfortunately cross over play (which is common to get the two best teams into the finals) was not instituted. So the Toronto Tornadoes and Team Rollerblade played off what was considered by all to be the best game of the Women's tournament. The score only slightly incorrect as reported in Andria's posting was 5-2. Team Rollerblade had to play a good defensive game against the offensive power of the Toronto Tornadoes. An indication of what the Inline officials thought of the two teams capabilities was shown by the selection of three Toronto Tornado players and two Team Rollerblade players (Goalie Jeanne Aura-Hall and Defense Linda Nowak [#5]) as the All-Tournament team. The only unfortunate aspect of the tournament was the Toronto Tornado players who decided to go drinking between the semifinal game and the championship game. They won the game 6-0 and looked sloppy and clumsy. #15 Team Rollerblade Sheryl E. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 96 20:41:41 GMT From: cmccorm@straths.strathcona.vic.edu.au (Christina McCormick) Subject: forthcoming games in Australia Hey everyone, I've got a series of games against another state, South Australia, and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice they could give my team, to give us a little hope and encouragement, to help us think we at least have a chance. USA hockey has a girls: Squirt division which is for girls 12 and under PeeWee division which is for girls 15 and under Midget division which is for girls 19 and under After 19 they are considered Senior players. and your observations are correct, there is no Bantam level. There have been girls at the age of 6 or 7 playing girls squirts. A lot of the player makeup of a team depends on the caliber of that team and the numbers of girls they have to draw from. A newly established team where nearly all the girls are just learning the sport can easily accommodate the much younger player without posing a safety risk to them. Also remember body checking is not a part of the girls game so strength and size is not as great an issue as it is with the boys. Hope this helped to clear up some of those foggy areas. All of the information in this email is PROPOSED, however, and may change depending on a number of things. This is just PROBABLY how it will be and is in no way definite yet. I will certainly let you know when it is definite. 1. The tournament will be broken down into 2 divisions. The top division (the A division) will be limited to club teams from universities or colleges. The level of play in this division will be for teams with women who have been playing hockey for several years. This division could have anywhere from 8-12 teams and will have a semi-final and a final round. The bottom division (the B division) will not be limited to colleges and universities; however, if too many teams are interested, college and university teams will be chosen over non-college/university teams. This level of play will be for teams of women who have been playing for 2 years or less (this season being their 2nd season). This division will be mainly for fun and will probably only have 6 teams which will be broken into 2 pools of 3 teams with the winners of each pool playing each other in the final game. 2. Colleges/universities may enter one team in each division (no roster overlap allowed). 3. Teams in the A division will be guaranteed at least 3 games and teams in the B division will be guaranteed at least 2 games. 4. There will be an entry fee to cover refs, programs, trophies, etc. We don't know how much this will be yet, but it will be less for B division teams. 5. The tournament will most likely be held March 6-9 (Thurs.-Sun.) 1997. Only local teams (MIT, Harvard Business School, etc.) will be scheduled to play on Thursday. Semi-local teams (Amherst, Holy Cross, etc.) could be scheduled to play on Thursday and Saturday (but not Friday so they don't have to stay in a hotel and don't have to make the 1 or 2 hour trip 2 days in a row). If you are a semi-local team please let us know if you would be willing to play on Thursday and Saturday. Non-local teams (those more than 2 hours away) will probably have one game on Friday and 2 on Saturday. In the A division, only the semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday. In the B division, only two regular games and the final will be played on Sunday. 6. The regular A division games will probably be 3 12-minute periods. The regular B division games will probably be either 3 10-minute periods or 2 20 or 25-minute running time periods. Ice will DEFINITELY be done before every "A" game and PROBABLY before every "B" game (unless we run into time problems). 7. The semi-finals and final of the "A" will be 3 15-minute periods. The final of the "B" will probably be 3 12-minute periods. Ice will DEFINITELY be done before these games. 8. Some sort of award will be given to the winning and runner-up teams of the "A" and to the winner of the "B." We're also trying to find out the whereabouts of the club trophy that is engraved with the winner after these championships are held. Does anyone know of this trophy? I think that's about it for now. Again, we don't get final approval until mid-September but we're 90% sure this is going to happen. So, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Also, please send a mailing address so we can send you an entry form if you are interested. I've already gotten several emails from interested teams and we have yet to call other teams. It looks like it's going to happen and all of us at MIT are very excited about it!! The information given about women junior age division has been extremely helpful, I was also wondering if these age divisions are the same in Roller Hockey, or if women play in mixed leagues? Women's hockey debuts as a medal sport at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. Several of the team members are expected to be current or past collegiate players. Smith, who for the past five seasons served as coach of the Northeastern men's hockey team, has resigned that position and agreed to a three-year appointment with USA Hockey. "The efforts that USA Hockey has made truly signify a new beginning for the women's program, and to be a part of the building process is a great honor," said Smith. "Having previously coached in an Olympic setting, I know what a feeling of exhilaration and adrenaline that representing your country provides." Smith's varied international coaching experience is lengthy, dating back to 1985. If our team is in a penalty kill situation, then four strong players are put out. If you don't use strong skaters in a penalty kill, your team won't be able to cover all the ice and all the other players, and the chances of being scored on is even greater. And, if a new player is put in that situation and is scored on it could really be demoralizing and lead the player feel that they had let the team down, when in fact the team should not have put a novice in that situation in the first place. The only other times a specific line is put out has been during the last two minutes of the game, if the game is really close. Another situation that often influences the amount of play time a particular line or player gets is how the opposing team puts their line out. If they have a really high caliber line that plays every other shift, it may be that your team needs to put their best line out every other shift to try and keep from being scored on so often. So, amount of play time depends somewhat on the situation at hand, and somewhat on the nature of the team and game. In general, if the game is close, and it's the last few minutes of play time, a team will put the line out that has the best chance of scoring. This strategy doesn't always work, but on average it works better than just putting the next line out. (That's why the professionals do it, but it doesn't always work with them either!) There is a girl on our team who also plays on another team. She is on the third or maybe fourth line there, and plays literally only a few minutes each game. Some games she has traveled to but gotten NO ice time at all!! If you find you are in a situation like that, it may be in your best interest to find another team where you'll get more play time. If you're getting lots of time, but not as much as the best skaters, then that's probably as much as you can hope for, at least for now! Improving at hockey is like improving at any other skill, it takes *patience*, practice and time. Also, even if someone (like >me) can't skate so well, we can be good passers and still >help the team. I play on a womens team that has no special lines. In fact, we don't have Power-play or penalty kill lines. Lines rotate normally and if there is a penalty kill, two of the next forward line go out and the remaining person goes out with the next lines center, then the remaining two of that line go out. If everyone takes short shifts, this works out perfectly and by the time the pk is over the next full line goes out. With regard to 'competitive'...if you are a college team, sure. It'sto be expected. But if everyone pays, why should anyone sit? It's a recreation league. So what if you win the State Championship. Its all for fun. I am one of the best skaters on my team, and while I would LOVE to have as much ice time as I can get, I don't think that its fair. I can remember playing on a mens team when I first started and always having to sit during PP and PKs. It doesn't do anything for team morale. Our womens team has both experienced and novice players, but each person is treated equally and everyone is so encouraging, that our team improved greatly during the year. The only way our players get better is to be in those kind of situations. And the positive energy really makes us play over our heads. <> <> <> Shannon Pelot Valerio <> <> <> ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 1996 09:21:12 -0400 (EDT) From: Mary Wood To: JACQUELINE TA Subject: Re: more competitive? Yes, in my experience teams that are more "competitive" and play to win do tend to win more games. Not all teams have this "depth in talent" that would allow for equal playing time in close games. If they did, then of course there would be no need to resort to "power lines" because all lines would be power lines. It also depends on who you are playing against. When playing against a much weaker team, the lesser skilled players would of course get more than their usual playing time since it would not be a case of trying to win a close game. Skating is central to hockey, and no matter how good sombody can pass, if they can't get to the puck or skate with the puck with any degree of agility they aren't in near as good a position to help the team win a close game than somebody who could. I understand your desire for more playing time, but that can be achieved by working harder to improve your skills so that you are no longer one of the "weaker skaters". Ice Hockey is a team sport, and the team comes first before the individual. Skill improvement is in direct proportion to the time and hard work that an individual puts in. Compare it to a work situation, would you expect somebody who had just entered a trade to receive the same salary as somebody who has been working at it for 20 years? One receives more pay as one increases her knowledge and skills. The same applies to ice hockey -- one will get more opportunities to play as one improves her skill. So keep working at it, and you'll see opportunities open up as you earn them! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 1996 13:19:22 -0400 From: pkocher@bu.edu (Pam Kocher) Subject: ??Harvard Business School team??? What you have to decide is whether you want to be on a team that plays to win, or plays to play. Usually there is a happy medium somewhere in between. To eliminate problems and to make sure everyone is on the same 'wave length' in this regard, at the beginning of our last season, our team took a vote on this exact topic. It was unanimous that we wanted to play to win and therefore will have PK and PP lines and in important games and situations the best Players will get the most ice.. It certainly worked well for us..In relation to the previous year we were much more competitive with this format and this made us a much more dedicated and proud team. As well, our increased level of competitivness enabled us to attract a few more 'top' Players to our team, which will not only increase our 'depth in talent' but will in turn raise the level of play and skills of all the Players on our team. Perhaps, using your desire to see more ice time will channel itself into the motivating force that will make you skate even harder and practice (on your own) a little more often so that in time you may be able to reap the rewards of your hardwork like some of the 'top' Players from your team have before you... Personally, it had that effect on me.. Good Luck in the upcoming season! Folks: Just want to warn you of a minor but important change to the way the mailing lists are configured. We have changed the default for replies so that they now point to the *mailing list*. Previously, these replies pointed to the original poster of a message to the list. PLEASE be careful that you don't accidentally send something to the list while you get used to the change -- if you assume something will be sent privately, you might make an embarassing mistake. There are three reasons we made this change: 1) Most mailing lists on the Internet are configured this way. People tend to be used to this format, and many have their mail clients configured to assume it. By being different, it creates small problems for many people. 2) Some mail gateways (ccMail is the worst offender) *assume* this configuration is the only configuration for mail lists, and they send error messages to the wrong address. This is why you people occasionally get streams of errors -- these sites are sending them to the original poster instead of where they belong. Unfortunately, you can't fight city hall -- this change will cause the errors to go where they belong: me. 3) A few new users, not understanding how mail lists work or reading the instructions, simply started replying to messages screaming to get taken off the list, sometimes in very hostile ways. Those mails, of course, ended up going to random users of the lists and not the list itself (and definitely not the admin). This isn't fun for either party. This new configuration will at least steer these newbies into the general direction of Laurie and myself, so we can deal with the issue before it blows completely out of proportion. I've been mulling over this change for about six weeks, looking over the situation and analyzing the plusses and minuses. In some ways, it's a little less convenient for some users (and more inconvenient for List Admins, since we can't reply privately as easy while doing List Mom work), and there's the potential for a few bloopers while people get used to the new configuration -- but the advantages of protecting end users from the list daemons and flamers, as well as simply getting better in step with other mail lists, make this worth doing, and I think overall, this will create a cleaner list environment. Also, as we move forward, I'll be migrating the lists from ListProc to SmartList, so this change (from what I can tell) will be coming sooner or later, so we might as well get used to it now. Getting those error messages out of your hair is worth a little bit of rebuilding mail habits. If you have any comments or feedback on this, feel free to drop me a line. Since *recreational* means different things to different people (from *we're really here so we can go drink beer later* to *we may have day jobs, but hockey is our life*) look for leagues with the words *developmental* or *novice* in the titles. These are usually house leagues where the point is to give everyone equal ice time. 2. Look for leagues that state up front that they are *for fun*. Clues to this include: a portion of the sign-up fee goes towards a beer fund, and a requirement that the championship team throws an end-of-season party. (be careful to check these out beforehand, because they can sometimes be very competitive) 3. Look for *old timers* leagues. The over-35 men's league here in Houston will let any woman play regardless of age. I have talked to several *old* players and they tend towards the equal-ice-for-equal-money philosophy. 4. If you don't have any other choices, play in the lowest skill level league offered. Even in Houston, the men's league offers AA, A, and B. Spend some time going to games and talking to team captians; ask players how they feel about less skilled, or new players. Identify the teams that offer equal ice time and arrange to play on them. I would like to know if other cities offer adult novice leagues. Houston has two good house novice leagues (mixed) for adults. For those who want to play in a women's club, the Chesapeake Bay Lightning is offering a developmental program for beginners to lower intermediate players this year. For those who want to play in mixed, or men's leagues, there is an Adult Novice Program at one of the rinks here (Piney Orchard), however they are more of a clinic rather than a league, and their scrimmages are more like "pickup". Hockey North America, with locations in alot of cities, offers an Adult Beginner league which features an 8-week "school", after which teams play other beginner teams for 8 games, a playoff, and a championship game. I've seen them in Northern California and now that we have a privately-owned rink we have one here in Tucson. Of course, in any city where hockey is just being introduced to the locals, generally until the player base is built up, the variation in talent on the teams is wide, so the "beginner's league" may have people who need a higher level of play, but who aren't advanced enough to play with the advanced group, and of course there aren't enough folks to form that middle group. There are teams for "girls" at several rinks, but for women in this area it seems to be the WashingtonWolves or the Lightning. We heard of a group on the Eastern shore that might have a team - but nothing concrete. There is a rumor which some of the Reston management passed on that the hockey mngr there is planning to start a rink sponsored women's league in the winter. However, just from skating I've met some women that did clinics there (in the eyes of the Reston rink womens clinics are totally separate - and I'mnot sure if they're equal) and then were told they weren't good enough to play with any of the teams there. Point being some of these women are now starting to participate with the Lightning - they're actually pretty good. For what it's worth, the attitude towards the little women playing the hard game seems a bit questionable. But that might pan out - late in the year, but...it may be closer for a VA person. The Lightning are moving to Laurel - so it's now closer to the beltway. As Mary Wood said, Hockey North America has teams, predominently men, that are looking - there are two skating out of Reston that I know of looking for players (they just moved from novice to C - but have several beginners)Also, it looks like the new rink at Laurel is going to have a "men's" league run by Huron Hockey. I guess it will permit female players - they should have info on theIceGardens page. Good luck - it seems that the norm for hockey in the metro DC area is to expect lots of driving - go where the ice is. But that goes for living in the area anyhow. Andre is a former NHL player, having played for the Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks. Along with Bobby Hull, he was one of the charter members of the World Hockey League. Andre's daughter is the head women's ice hockey coach at Trinity College in Connecticut, and Andre, with support from the Oakland Junior Hockey Club, is determined that hockey for young girls becomes a thriving activity in the Bay Area. We hope this session will be the first of a series of girls-only low-cost hockey sessions to be held at Oakland throughout the year. Adult League pre-season will continue thru next week at The Gardens Ice House, in Laurel, MD. Rink info is on http://www.thegardensicehouse.com/ Anyhow, the hockey program is starting up, and being run by Nelson Hockey. The head coach is Nelson Burton, former NHL pro (Caps, Nordiques, Stars), who is the coach of DeMatha High (MD state champs) and the Chespeake Bay Lightning Womens Team. The pre-season activities started this week, each evening having about 30 players. The schedule for this past week & next week are: (23 Sep -3 Oct) Monday 10pm Novice-Intermediate Clinic with Scrimmage $20 Tuesday 9:45pm Intermediate-Advanced Clinic with Scrimmage $20 Wednesday 10pm Novice-Intermediate Pick-Up $10 Thursday 10pm Intermediate-Advanced Pick-Up $10 All sessions are at least 90 minutes The plan is to get the league started 2nd week of Oct, looking now as if it will be either 2 Tiers or mixed level. Nelson will set the teams, for those coming as individuals - if your bring an entire team then you get to set it. The play appears to be solid intermediate (with a few novices & some very advanced players). League will include 1 practice, 1 game minimum per week. Trying to keep the fee under $300 for the entire Oct-Apr season, including 1 team "practice' jersey & refs. We are arranging equipment discounts with a local hockey supplier & still working the $$$ details. In addition to the league activities, there will be weekly clinics & pick-up, which anyone can participate in. Preliminary Schedule - Included in the league fee: 1 practice/week (Tues-Thurs night times, 9:45 -12, depending) 1 game/week (Sun. slots, after 7pm) Teams of 15 max (may be less...) Additionally: Drop-ins for Pick-up every Friday night, 10pm, 30 player limit ~$10 Weekly clinic (prob. Mon/Wed night) - may be series price, or $20 per Play is co-ed (a few brave women), non-check (HAHAHAHAHA) well, at least non-cross check ;^) & *Full SLAPSHOT*. Full equipment, but face shields not required -even if some of us think it's nuts not to have one :-) Anyhow, all comers welcome, seeking more players & especially *GOALIES NEEDED*. The clinics & scrimmages have been great this week. A lot of former MIDGET & college "players" picking back up, as well as the rest of us adult players. Last night's pick-up did include the first blood on the ice - the player did come back after bandaging, and putting a cage on! Some of the addicts have been out every night (not just me) :-) And, for those of you that have been to the Gardens, the ice is definitely getting better. NHL rink is good ice - pretty fast, the Olympic rink is reasonably smooth now - pretty much on a par with what's around & getting better. The Mon. session went for over 2 hours - extra ice time. If you're interested, come by, e-mail to me or you can call the Gardens 301-953-0100. We're putting together e-mail (& snail)distr. list . Sorry the post took so long. After seeing the request here for U.S. College Hockey Online to add some women's coverage, I added to the links page a list of links to some women's information. Included there are links to Andria's college hockey info and Richard Hungerford's files in the HOCKEY-L archives such as the 1996-97 women's composite schedule and standings. Richard has done a terrific job on these files. The page also includes a link to Richard's women's hockey info file, which contains addresses (US mail) for many of the college programs in the US. To get to the links on USCHO, go to: http://www.uscollegehockey.com/ and click on "Links". Then look for the women's links section. USCHO has a limited staff, so to start out, we have chosen to concentrate on men's DivI hockey. We hope that as the project gains momentum, we will be able to add personnel and thus add coverage of topics like women's hockey and men's DivII-III hockey. But to start, we will not be able to give it the coverage it deserves - men's DivI already takes up all of our time. Yet, we decided to make some of the women's links available from the links page so people who visit the site and are interested in women's hockey will have a place to go - a place where some other people are providing better coverage than we can right now. Hopefully people will understand. But it cannot hurt to send your request for USCHO to cover women's college hockey to: info@uscollegehockey.com I do not read that mail, but another staff member does, and all suggestions are important. If you are a follower of men's college hockey too, we hope you will find USCHO interesting. And as I said, hopefully USCHO will enjoy some success and enable us to expand our coverage into areas that deserve it. Being in California, we are out of the mainstream and are learning what is available. Ana wants to play hockey in college, but also what she studies is also important. It is a big job to sort through all the options and at first we didn't know where to begin. I stumbled on the women-in-hockey pages last year and found them a great beginning, until that time I had little idea what colleges were available. Thanks to these pages I now have names and address of all the colleges and coaches. Luckily two years ago my daughter attended the Elite hockey camp at Dartmouth and returned again this last summer. The exposure at camp was very helpful. Coach Crowe would evaluate your playing during the camp if requested and suggest the level of college play that you would be most likely to succeed in. Ana also attended Rinksports camp and Coach Kay from UNH did a similar evaluation for the players. Unfortunately, if you will be going into college next year, this is not an option. These evaluations were a good guideline then to direct us to certain colleges. Since Ana plays primarily on boys' teams it is hard to know or judge her playing ability to other girls and to have an unbias evaluation helped us narrow the field. We are now concentrating our search to schools in the ECAC Alliance and evaluating the curriculums of those schools. We have written to each of the schools and coaches to obtain more information on the programs and are planning a trip to visit a few of the top prospects. All the coaches and schools have been very helpful. They have suggested that Ana come and spend a day or overnight, if possible, to see the college and meet the team and get feel for the school. It is one thing to want to play hockey in college, but remember the primary reason you are going to college is to get an education. My best advice is to sit down and determine all the factors that should make up your decision; major area of study, tuition, finanical aid, location, type of school (urban or rural, large or small), and their hockey team. The internet has been a fantastic resource, every college we are evaluating has extensive web pages on every aspect of the school including admission forms, use it! Good luck in your selection and I hope my message is helpful to others in the hunt. A good rock "gender neutral" song that would probably work would be "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. If you listen to it, it could probably be adapted to any hockey game. On the same subject, a local channel in Cleveland did a story on our women's team last year. They interviewed several of us, and included practice footage. It was well done, except in the beginning and end, when they wrapped the piece with music... which was "Girls Just Want To Have Fun." Sort of took the seriousness out of the piece. On the other hand. The Plain Dealer, Cleveland's newspaper, did a large feature on us last week. The article was pretty good, but seemed to focus on how aggressive we were as a group. Since we are on the subject of society (or the media) not respecting wonen hockey players. . . . . On September 21, the Red Wings and the Penguins faced off in Houston for and exhbition game. We have IHL hockey, but seldome get NHL here. A local car dealership, Sterling McCall Toyota, sponsored the event (as in their name was plastered ALL over it). The second intermission featured a "women's hockey game" played between the Miller Lite Billboard Girls who were wearing (translated -- falling out of) black cocktail dresses and tiarras. To really top things off, they couldn't skate. I really took this bad. We are just now getting one hour of women's only ice here a week. We are working hard to get a *very recreational* team together for the tournament in Las Vegas in February. So far, we can't get a sponsor for jearsys/socks. In general, male hockey players here are very good about playing with women, but the girls playing here (on boys teams) take alot of trash. I wrote a letter to Mr. Sterling McCall outlining the fact that over 50% of the IHL season ticket holders here are women and that he had poorly chosen enternainment for that particular demographic. I also outlined the fact that the event was hailed as *family entertainment* but hardly qualified as such. I didn't hear from Mr. McCall, but he had his marketing company call me and tell me that it wasn't his (Mr. McCall's) fault. The guy actually thought that the fact that he had *helped bring NHL hockey to Houston* made demeaning women OK. Apparently, a very crude local radio station had participated as a *media partner* and got to design that slot (making this clearly not his problem). In the end, he said that he might try to use the women's program in next year's promotional, but he really didn't come off as all that sincere. This guy seemed to think that I was an isolated *problem* and kept saying that he just wasn't familliar with women's hockey. To think that a discussion on how the sport of women's hockey is perceived and presented is about "the feminist movement" and not about the sport is narrow, at best. How the sport is presented influences the sport itself. The perceived prestige or validity of the sport dictates aspects such as the ice time provided (amount and hours of day), media coverage of *real* women's hockey games, quality of coaches, etc. Mary, I do not understand how you can say that people discussing and acting on this issue indicates a lack of interest in hockey. For those of us who weren't allowed to play in the boys leagues (and no one felt it was in their interest to have girls leagues), having some ignorant fool make light of everything we've accomplished in the last 30 years harkens back to the "bad old days" when girls and women weren't supposed to play "real" sports, or if they did, were considered part of the local freak show. Guess what? I don't want to go back there, and I'll be damned if some girl gets the idea that she's not supposed to play hockey because of what some uninformed dolts find amusing. And I've had mothers bring their daughters over to me after a practice, after the pads and the helmet came off, and they saw it was a woman who had been out there on the ice, and I told them all--"yeah, girls can play hockey!" Shelly is a relatively new player who started in an instructional (no competition yet) program this Spring. The program started as "Moms on Ice" - a collection of mothers who had children playing in other leagues. In these few months that Shelly has been involved, she has become one of the more talented players in the program. Unfortunately, the program has remained pretty much a "mom's night out" and that has been frustrating for Shelly and those who want to be more competitive, agressive and knowledgeable. On top of that, the group that organizes this program is disorganized (can't afford rink time regularly, won't call when practice is cancelled, etc.) and is in a political battle with the local rink. As you can imagine, this just adds to the frustration Shelly experiences. This group's new plan involves ice time at a rink in York, PA, which is about a half-hour south of us. I am trying to convince her to look into your program, which seems much better and more suited to her wants. You folks would be about 2 hours from us, but I would think the trip may be worth it. Shelly may be able to bring several other gals with her and make it more worthwhile for all. I (speaking for Shelly) would appreciate any comments you may have on these issues. Please include Shelly on your mailing list and keep her apprised of the clinic-type programs you offer. While on-ice workouts are clearly the best way to improve your game, ice time isn't always available. Street hockey and roller hockey are the next closest alternatives for conditioning and skills training, but beyond that, there's always running, plyometrics, and weight lifting. Simply doing regular runs, sit-ups and push-ups can make a big difference in stamina and strength. As for a specific program, I don't know what would be appropriate for that age level or level of competition. If you're committed to *serious* off-ice training, you might want to talk with a professional trainer. Also, an easy way to work on stick handling at home is to use a golf ball and just stick handle indoors for 5-10 minutes a day -- you can even do it while watching TV. Good Luck. Do these two workouts on alternate days: 1. Fartlek program: bets done on a soft (if possible a dirt road or trail in the woods), hilly route 4 minutes- jog slowly to warm up 4 minutes- sprint 20 yds.then, walk 50 yds., repeat 7-15 minutes- jog/run 1 minute- run backwards 25 yds, forwards 25 yds., repeat 4 minutes- walk 1 minute- hop on left leg 25 yds, hop on right leg 25 yds., repeat 2 minutes- jog/run 30 seconds- run as fast as you can 2. mark off a length of 20 yds. alternating feet that you start with, start from a standstill and sprint 20 yds, then jog slowly back to the start. do this 10-15 times. it is recommended that someone claps as a signal for you to start sprinting to improve quickness, but it's not essential. after doing the sprints, go for a "long" jog/run to build up endurance (at least 25 minutes or so) this workout can be supplemented with push-ups, etc. to increase arm strength. the fartlek program really does result in a noticable improvement in sprinting speed on land _and_ on ice in about 2 weeks. and it's a lot more fun than just going running. also, it places emphasis on time, not on distance covered. also, of course, there are always plyometrics... ugh. if you have any questions about this program, feel free to write back! and buy _the hockey handbook_ by lloyd percival! i used to read it on the bus on the way to games in high school, thinking maybe i'd learn something new on the way. :) -julie rusczek #8, williams college women's varsity hockey, williamstown, mass. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 09:02:48 -0400 From: Donald_Wright@Brown.EDU (Don Wright) Subject: Re: Conditioning There a real nice piece at Planet Hockey's web site about off-seasoning conditioning. She's four times a week on the ice, thereof 2 games. I don't know, for how many additonal practices she could call up her team to a particular place, i assume there is no more time for such a thing, that's why she's asking for a program, to do on their own. There were some recent replys, who suggested working in the stamina-range on the workouts. This is not entirely wrong, but most likley calls up problems in full recovery, because during an icehockey-game a lot of the encumbrance lies in the stamina-range. And to recover FULL from a two-game weekend you need at least 2-3 days, assuming a good acyclic endurance! This four times on ice a week are for sure enough for endurance and more than enough for stamina! But if you think, they should work on something beyond hockey-skills, on their own, what about power? You can never have enough of that, for hockey! You could work together with a fitness studio and let them work out a program with the focus primary on the hole body and secondary on the legs. But be carefull, you can do that only with people in the post puberal phase, the younger should work with there own body-weight only! My team works year around one ore two times a week on power and there is still a big progress in speed and starting! Just work regularly with an endurance sport (running, biking), this means at least two times a week for more than 30 minutes with a speed you can hold for the hole exercice. But for me, the most prefered thing would be, doing the endurance, as described above, on the inline-skates! Why? First, it is specific, that means you work with your leg-muscles in the same range as in icehockey. Second, The psychology, the very most icehockey-players like it more than running and biking! And last but not least, you can work at the same time on the skating skills (staying low!). All, I am sorry that I started throwing rocks and left town, but the guys who make it possible for me to afford hockey felt I needed to go to Dallas for busines. . . Thanks to everyone who responded to my *respect* post! I plan to respond to some individually, but that will take awhile! I was really amazed by the support I got from this list. What a great group of people! The comment that how our sport is percieved affects us in tangible ways (i.e. amount and time of day for ice) is so true! We are very fortunate that there is one Hockey Director here in Houston who is committed to getting women's hockey off the ground. But she has to make the ice time profitable, so we are really trying to get the word out to as many women as possible. If we aren't able to build enough women consistently soon, we may lose the time (or get moved to an undesirable slot). Thanks for the letters written on our behalf and thanks for the good advice. (I will be following up this week on many of the fine suggestions!) And thanks to Melissa for including the story in GoGirl! Magazine. With Fondest Regards, Lea ------------------------------
