In this assignment you will be using the word processing package, Microsoft Word, to create a resumé and a research essay. The resumé must be made using MS Word's resumé wizard. The research essay will give you an opportunity to do some library and Internet research on a specific computer science topic.
In this part of the assignment, you will be using MS Word's resumé wizard to create a resumé. This resumé does not have to be the same as the HTML resumé that you submitted for assignment 1.
To use MS Word's resumé wizard, click on File->New.... This will bring up a number of different templates and wizards. Choose the Other Documents tab, and select the Resume Wizard.wiz wizard file to create a new resumé document. Follow the directions provided to produce your resumé.
Once you have finished your resumé, print out a hard copy to be submitted. Please see the section below called "submission instructions" for further information about how to submit this hard copy.
The resumé will be worth 20% of your mark for A3. You will be marked on such things as content and completeness. You must use the MS Word wizard to create your resumé.
In this part of the assignment, you must use MS Word to create a research essay. We will provide you with a list of computer science topics, from which you must choose a topic to research.
You can explore computer science, mathematics and engineering publications and periodicals, both in paper and electronic form. There are numerous web pages that can serve as references. You may find information on some topics in the popular press. There may be a newsgroup that focuses on the topic, or an aspect of the topic. You may be able to find an expert at a university or in industry, either in person or on the Internet.
You must choose a topic from the following list of topics:
Research your topic and write a concise paper that is double spaced, and that contains 1000-1500 words. Essays that are longer or shorter than 1000-1500 words will be penalized. When you have finished writing your paper, use MS Word's Tools->Word Count... option (do not click the option to "Include footnotes and endnotes") to determine how many words are in your paper. You must include this total number of words on your essay's title page.
Present your research as a collection of organized paragraphs about your topic. You can use subheadings within your essay, if you like. You must include a title page that states the topic you researched, your name, student number, and the number of words in your essay. Please note that this title page is in addition to the A3 cover page. You must also include a list of your references, which you should quote appropriately (use any of the standard bibliography/reference formats). Use at least one footnote within your essay.
You must include at least a total of 5 outside sources (references), as follows:
You must write your essay assuming that the reader does not know anything about your topic. This means that your explanations must be very clear and detailed; they should not be geared towards an audience that has former computer science knowledge.
Start your paper with a clear definition of your topic. In some cases, an example will be appropriate. Then expand your discussion including a description of how the topic relates to the discipline of Computer Science. If you like, you can discuss how it relates to the topics in CSC104. You may want to expand a certain sub-topic or example that is related to your topic. If there is room for debate, present both sides of the issue and your opinion. If there is a historical aspect, present a brief history. Make sure that you present the current research and expert opinion on your topic.
The library has many resources for researching material, for example http://eir.library.utoronto.ca/eir/index.cfm. There are many different indexes available in the UofT library catalogs. Focus on those that address your topic.
The University also has resources for helping with writing style and proficiency. Start with http://www.utoronto.ca/writing.
In addition, here is a longer list of resources, that you might find helpful: http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~andria/csc/104s00/a3/resources.html
There are many commercial search engines on the web, such as Yahoo, Alta Vista, Google, Lycos, Webcrawler, Excite, Magellan, and Infoseek.
Hand in a paper printout of both your resumé and your essay paper (including its title page and list of references). Staple the pages in your resumé together, if it contains more than one page. In addition, staple together the title page, body, and references of your research paper. There is no need to print the contents of any of your references. You are not required to submit a floppy diskette.
Place your printed pages in an 8.5 x 11 inch unsealed envelope and give it to your TA at the beginning of your tutorial. Make sure that you attach a copy of the A3 cover page to the front of your envelope. The information you write on this cover page must be complete, readable, and accurate.
Late assignments will be accepted until 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 19th. They will receive a penalty of -30%. They must be left in the CSC104 late drop box (just outside SF2305A).
The research essay will be worth 80% of your mark for A3. Your grade will be based on the completeness of your research, the composition and organization of your essay, and the style of your writing.
Make sure that you are familiar with the guidelines regarding avoiding plagiarism in the code of academic discipline. Contact your instructor if clarification is needed.
