Hi everyone, Here is a modified version of an e-mail message that I answered for a student. I thought I'd provide my answer here on the web page, in case there are other students who have the same questions. Please note that I have changed the student's account to h104hunt .... you should substitute your own account name here. A.L. Hunter andria@cdf.utoronto.ca -------------- Dear student, > In tutorial and in our first class, you have both mentioned the site > http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~104hunt (the latter part being my user name). > When I type this, upon getting into Netscape, I am given the error message > "Not Found...The requested URL /~104hunt was not found on this server. There is an "h" missing in front of the 104. (But even by fixing that, it won't make your web page visible, because I checked your directry and you don't have an index.html file in your H:\public_html folder at CDF-PC.) Your web page URL should be: http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/~h104hunt/ Which your TA probably explained is the same as: http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/~h104hunt/index.html The above addresses will both cause the index.html web page to be loaded. You'll only see something loaded into your web browser if you have an index.html file in your H:\public_html folder in your CDF-PC account. [Note that www.cdf.toronto.edu is the same as www.cdf.utoronto.ca] > Is it this URL, plus the name of my assignment (e.g. Resume) that I am > supposed to send to Sidath? When you create your file called resume.html and put it in the H:\public_html folder at CDF-PC, it will be visible at this web page address: http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/~h104hunt/resume.html Please note that it is case sensitive. If you were to save your HTML file as Resume.html, then it would be visibile at this web page address instead: http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/~h104hunt/Resume.html > And upon completing our assignments (especially those that are done at > home), how do we go about copying it onto the CDF-PC computers? Is it to > the H: drive that we copy our work, or in the URL file given above? (I left > my copy of "The PC Handbook" at home). Actually, I'm not sure that the handbook would have answered that question anyways. Your TA may have explained where to copy the files during your tutorial. The only assignment that you'll need to submit by copying it to the CDF-PC computers is Assignment 1. All of the other assignments will either be submitted on a diskette (Assignment 2) or handed in on paper (all assignments will have some form of paper submission). Please note that the word hardcopy is another way of saying paper copy. If you are working on your HTML files for Assignment 1 at home, you'll need to put all of your files on a diskette once you have finished making them. The easiest way to do this is to save each of your HTML files to the A: drive from within Notepad (make sure there is a diskette in the A: drive). [This could also be done using the Explorer program.] Now take your diskette to campus and put it in a CDF-PC computer. You need to transfer your HTML files on the A: drive to the H:\public_html folder. The easiest way to do this is to start up Notepad, and to click "File->Open..." to open one of your HTML files on the A: drive. Select "A:" for "Look in" and select "All Files" for "Files of type" and then simply double click on the file that you'd like to open. Then click "File->Save As..." and specify that you want to save it on the H: drive and in the public_html folder. The filename will be the same name as the file you had on the A: drive. Repeat this for each file on the A: drive. [This could also be done using the Explorer program.] Now you'll be able to load the web page listed above. ----- Please note that if you do not have a H:\public_html folder already, then you can create one by double clicking on the "wwwsetup" program, that you can get to by double clicking the "tools" folder on your desktop at CDF-PC.
