Hi everyone, Here is a modified version of an e-mail message that I answered for a student. I thought I'd provide my answer here on the web page, in case there are other students who have the same questions. Please note that I have changed the student's account to h104hunt .... you should substitute your own account name here. A.L. Hunter andria@cdf.utoronto.ca -------------- Dear student, > First, are we submitting our assignment to > http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/~h104hunt or > http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~h104hunt > (I have both written down)? These are exactly the same thing. As long as you have an index.html file in your H:\public_html folder, then the above two addresses will both cause it to be displayed. One is an alias of the other. > I have followed what you have suggested, but I'm still running into 2 > problems. I am not completely done my resume, but I just wanted to copy it > over to the H:/ drive to ensure that it works. This is unrelated, but just so that you are aware, you do not need to put your HTML file in your H:\ drive to view it in Netscape. You can view the local copy instead of giving an URL in Netscape. You can use the option in Netscape to open your HTML file from the floppy disk, or any place on your hard drive. You just need to start up Netscape, and then select File->Open and choose to browse the files on your system. Once you locate your HTML file, click on it to open it in Netscape. Once you are finished, you can copy it to the H:\public_html folder. If the CDF server currently has a problem, this would at least allow you to view your HTML files locally. > After saving the file onto the H:/ directory, and when I run either URL(s) > above, such as http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~h104hunt/Resume.html, I get an > error message of "Forbidden...You don't have permission to access > /~h104hunt/Resume.html on this server". The TA mentioned that there are > steps that I need to follow in order to make this public. Do you know how? > Is there something that you need to do in order to "fix" this problem? First, double click on the "Tools" folder that you'll find on your desktop. Then double click on the "wwwsetup" file to run it. This will ensure that everything has been set up correctly. Once you have done that, make sure that you have copied your resume.html file to the H:\public_html folder. It must be in that folder in order to be visibile on the web. I notice that you are using "Resume.html" in your URL, with a capital "R" in the name of the HTML file. This is fine, as long as that filereally has a capital "R" in it. Verify that you have the exact same upper and lower case in your file name that you put in your URL and the actual name stored on your disk. If you are still having problems, it must be the case that the server is down at the moment. This is quite possible, as I tried to connect to the CDF web server from home just now, and I was not able to connect. If that's the case, you'll need to try again later. I'll contact the system administrator to find out if it is a long term problem. [*Please note: I have now contacted the system administrator and the problem has been cleared up.*] > Another problem: whenever I run my any ".html" files - whether on diskette > or on the H:/ drive, I'm continually getting the message "Cannot find the > file 'H:\public_html\Resume.html' (or one of its components). Make sure the > path and fiename are correct and that all required libraries are > available". Rather than running the ".html" files, you could try starting up Netscape, and then opening your HTML files from within Netscape. You can open them from the diskette or hard drive or wherever you have them stored. If the file association is not set up correctly, this might bypass the problem. > A couple of hours ago, I was actually at my dad's office where > I tried to run my work, and no error messages occurred. So I don't know if > this might be a problem within the CDF-PC lab. (The TA didn't know how to > rectify the problem). I'm just concerned that if this problem persists when > I submit my assignment, that I will be docked marks. Do you mean that you were able to see your web pages using the http://www.cdf.toronto.edu/~h104hunt URL? If that's the case, it seems very likely that you have everything set up just fine, but the problem is just that CDF was down temporarily. [*As it turns out, this was the problem.*] > Thanks again...and sorry to bother you. Could you please (again) forward You're welcome. Please let me know if you still have problems. I know they are going through some changes at CDF-PC so this may be part of the trouble. A.L. Hunter andria@cdf.utoronto.ca
