Hi everyone, Here is a modified version of an e-mail message that I answered for a student. I thought I'd provide my answer here on the web page, in case there are other students who have the same questions. Please note that I have changed the student's account to h104hunt .... you should substitute your own account name here. A.L. Hunter andria@cdf.utoronto.ca -------------- Dear student, > Dear Professor Hunter, > I am currently doing my webpage for the June 6th class. But I have a few > questions regarding it: > 1. If you are working at home, you will need to use either Netscape or Internet Explorer to view your web page. First you must save your HTML file somewhere on either the hard drive or the floppy drive. 1. If you are using Netscape, you'll need to select "File -> Open Page..." and then click on "Choose File..." and select your HTML file (from where you saved it on either your C: hard drive or A: floppy drive). You'll be opening the file in Navigator (not Composer), click on "Open." 2. If you are using MS Internet Explorer, you'll need to select "File -> Open..." and then click on "Browse..." and select your HTML file (from where you saved it on either your C: hard drive or A: floppy drive). > As my TA said in the tutorial, it must be saved under the public_html > file. But once it is saved in there how do I view it on the web? If you have saved your file in the H:\public_html folder on campus, you can either view it on the web by typing in the complete URL into Netscape, such as http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~h104hunt/index.html (assuming your file is called index.html). Or you could view it locally using the instructions that I explained above (we are using Netscape on at CDF-PC). > 2. How do I state the address of my website so that it is under the > URL: www.cdf.utoronto/~h104XXXX/? I am a little confused as how to do that. If you name your file resume.html and save it in the H:\public_html folder, your web page address is: http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~h104hunt/resume.html If you name your file index.html and save it in the H:\public_html folder, your web page address is either one of these (they are the same): http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~h104hunt/index.html http://www.cdf.utoronto.ca/~h104hunt/ Note that index.html is a special filename, so even if you leave the index.html out of the URL, it will still load the index.html file.
