The following two videos from the BBC series, The Machine that Changed the World, will be shown during lecture this term. Please note that you will be asked questions about these videos on the final exam.

Giant Brains: Week 9

This is a video about the history of computers. It traces the history of computers up to and including the ENIAC. It also gives an excellent introduction to the binary system and the stored-program concept. It was written by Fiona Holmes.

Thinking Machine: Week 12

This video is devoted to artificial intelligence and what computer scientists, psychologists, and philosophers have learned about human intelligence in the process of trying to teach computers to "think." It was written and produced by Jon Palfreman.

Missed the Video?

In case you were unable to attend the lecture, or would like to watch the videos again before the final exam, they are available at both the Scarborough and St. George campuses.

At the Scarborough Campus, go to room R-3228, and they will make the videos available for you to screen next door in room R-3227.

At the St. George campus, you can view them in the Audio Visual Library, which is in the Sigmund Samuel library (9 King's College Circle). For more information, see the AV library web page or the library guide. There are 20 individual viewing stations in the AV library. You cannot take the videos out of the library.
