Le hockey féminin au Danemark

Thank you very much to John Christiansen for going to the trouble of getting this information on women's hockey in Denmark for me. John maintains the Danish Hockey Homepage which contains information about men's hockey in Denmark, and when I asked him if he would mind finding some information about women's hockey in Denmark, he kindly agreed ... and apparently had to go to a lot of trouble to get the information! Thanks John!

The following information was provided by Camilla Mersoe (allimac.Mersoe@dk-online.dk) who is from Copenhagen, Denmark and plays for Team HIK in Denmark. Thanks Camilla! :-)

    Danish Women's Hockey Leagues:

There are about 400 active players in the country. All teams are from private clubs. No school teams. Only one club, Herlev, has enough players to have two teams in the division. All other teams are only represented with one team. The ages on the team varies from ~12 to 49 (The oldest that I know of at the moment). Everyone plays together, there are no aged-determined teams in Denmark, because there are too few players.

There are two women's hockey divisions in Denmark, one with 7 teams and the other with 6 teams. At the end of each season, the top three teams from each league compete in the National Championship. Here are the teams in the two Danish leagues:

    Sjaellands Ishockey Union (SIU)

    Jysk Ishockey Union (JIU)

    1996 Danish National Championship

The Danish Women's Nationals took place at Herlev Sk=F8jtehal, Denmark on March 1-3, 1996. The top three from each division competed in an everybody-meets-everybody (round robin) system. The following six teams qualified for the 1996 Danish National Championship:

Here are the individual results of all round-robin games from the 1996 National Championship:

    Herlev - Rungsted 10 - 1
    FIK - Aarhus 8 - 2
    HIK - Herning 9 - 0
    Aarhus - Rungsted 1 - 8
    Herlev - HIK 5 - 3
    FIK - Herning 5 - 2
    Herlev - Herning 4 - 1

Herlev won the Danish Championship by winning 1-0 in the final vs. HIK. The above 3 teams are not the only teams in Denmark. I've been told that the following teams play in the league too: Rungsted, AAB, Herning, Esbjerg, Odense and Aarhus (but didn't make it to the playoffs).
