Runjie (Bill) Shi is an EngSci Biomed 1T8+PEY graduate currently in the MD/PhD program. His PhD research is on developing mobile ophthalmology diagnostic devices at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. His other research interests include clinical applications of surgical robotics and computer vision.
Adam is a 3rd year ECE student, specializing in computer hardware. He did his first year in EngSci, before switching to ECE. His interests lie in the intersection digital logic, AI acceleration and computer architecture. In his free time, he plays guitar, makes music and likes to run.
Serena Liu is a 2T4+PEY Engineering Science student pursuing the biomedical systems engineering major and artificial intelligence minor. Her PEY is on structural biology cryo-EM software, and her research interest lies in the field of computational neuroscience. Outside of school, she likes playing badminton, horse riding, gaming, and skiing.
Jason Zhang is an EngSci 2T4 + PEY in the Biomedical Systems option. He has worked with UofT's Music and Health Science Research Collaboratory to write Python scripts for analyzing and visualizing motion-tracking data of marimbists. He is also an avid trombonist.
Nicholas is a Third Year Computer Engineering student, but from his time in EngSci, his favourite course was ESC180/190. In his free time, he plays jazz piano, and is interested in how technology can be used in music.
Max is a fourth year CS specialist at UofT who is interested in software engineering. During his free time, he enjoys going out on walks and listening to music.
Qinghao (Michael) Zhang is a second year PhD student in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He loves coding and his field focuses on IC layout parsing, processing meshing and potential integral equations for EM simulation. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball and exploring fishing spots.
Natalie is a EngSci 2T4 + PEY, majoring in Machine Intelligence. She's interested in machine learning and distributed systems. Outside of ESC180/190 questions, Natalie is also happy to chat about choosing majors or PEY - feel free to reach out!
Mateusz Kazimierczak is a third-year Engineering Science student pursuing the ECE major and artificial intelligence minor. During the summer, Mateusz worked at Rocscience (a Toronto based geotechnical software company), where he researched and implemented in C++ various optimization algorithms for slope parameter back analysis. In his free time he practices Judo at Hart House and goes jogging around Queens Park.
Nathan is a 2T5 ECE who is researching reinforcement learning methods in video games. He enjoys teaching code and is saddened when students don't ask questions. Although he is chronically online, he is probably not a robot.
Jiadong (Gary) Liang is an EngSci 2T6 majoring in Machine Intelligence. He is interested in math, data science, and machine learning. In his free time, he enjoys reading and playing sports.
Cameron is an EngSci Robo 2T2+PEY, and is now a 2nd year MASc in ECE researching computational models of morphogenesis under Stephen Brown & Kevin Truong. Over the last 2 summers, he worked with Matt Thomson's group at Caltech researching the controllability of LLMs, prompting and semantic learning, and recently appeared on MLST. He founded the Society for the Pursuit of AGI at U of T, and in his free time loves a game of foosball.
Yuntao (Winston) Wu is a first year MASc student in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research focuses on blockchain and machine learning applications in finance.
Emerson Grabke is a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering, enrolled in the combined MD/PhD Program at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and an EngSci 1T7 (Robotics) alumnus. His research focuses on the applications of machine learning to medical imaging interpretation for the purpose of cancer diagnosis. In his spare time, Emerson enjoys the violin, video games, 3D printing, and swing dancing.
George Saad is a 4th year Engineering Science student pursuing the Machine Intelligence major. He completed a software engineering internship with Facebook last summer and enjoys working on open-source and freelance projects. In his free time, he enjoys playing chess, reading, and swimming.
Samantha Unger is a fourth-year Engineering Science student, pursuing the biomedical systems option and a minor in artificial intelligence. She has been engaged with research looking at synthetic biology, selective peripheral nerve recording, and wearable data analysis, though not simultaneously. Outside of academics, Samantha enjoys exploring Toronto to try new ice cream flavours and experimenting with making ice cream herself.
QiLin Xue is a third year Engineering Science student in the Physics option. He loves working with all sorts of data whether it is from physics, natural language, or from web scraping miscellaneous websites. He is also an avid enjoyer of sports, such as code golf and leetcode marathons.

Professor

Michael is available during his office hours Wednesday 6pm-7pm in BA2028 and on Zoom
Michael Guerzhoy taught in EngSci on and off since 2007. He's been Assistant Professor, Teachihg Stream in EngSci and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering since 2020. Recently, he's been a lecturer at the Center for Statistics and Machine Learning at Princeton University and a Senior Data Scientist at St. Michael's Hospital. Michael teaches data science, computer science, and machine learning and applies data science and machine learning to improve patient care. He also enjoys taking on data science consulting projects on the side. When not working, Michael likes to sing, sometimes about grading.
