CSC 300 Computers and Society Fall 2012 UTM University of Toronto News Reporting Student reporters will provide weekly summaries of current events that relate to the course. It is up to you to find appropriate resources. Where to start: The local daily papers have technology sections on-line like: http://www.globetechnology.com The international papers: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/technology, http://www.ft.com/companies/it. There are also Canadian trade-publications: Computing Canada and Computer World Canada: http://itbusiness.ca, http://itworldcanada.com. And international trade-publications: http://acm.org/technews. Specific topic oriented documents: http://www.csl.sri.com/users/risko/risks.txt. There are also socio-technically oriented news sites: http://www.wired.com. Reporters should present the material clearly. Presentations should be between 5 and 10 minutes in length. Reporters should be ready for questions and should be ready to lead discussion. Reporting is worth 5 marks. Presentations must be in electronic form so they can be posted in the course web pages. Reporters must correspond with each other to make sure that they present different topics. In most weeks there will be three different reporters.
