Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to attribute mental (e.g., beliefs, goals) and affective (e.g., emotion) states to oneself, and to others. Ideally, Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, that are increasingly required to interact with humans in a myriad of settings, would be able to use their ToM as a tool to benefit those they interact with, both humans and other AI systems. However, AI systems are lagging in their ability to employ their ToM when reasoning about the mental and affective states of other agents. My research focuses on augmenting intelligent agents with ToM reasoning in a variety of reasoning tasks, including explanation, assistance and plan recognition. I hope to highlight the feasibility of creating such agents and the extent to which their application in real world settings can benefit humans.
