Project Description

Here is the initial description of my research project and goals:

The topic of this project is Automated Web Service and Composition with User Preferences.

Web services are Web-accessible programs and devices such as the map services at www.mapquest.ca or the book-buying service at www.amazon.com. The web is currently designed for human-interpretation and use. The semantic Web proposes a vision for a next-generation Web that is computer interpretable. Realization of aspects of the semantic Web is underway, and will enable a diversity of new functionality, including the automated composition of programs and devices to realize a particular task. In specifying such tasks, user preferences are central. One need only consider the myriad of preferences and constraints used in planning a trip to envision the need and the complexities. The expression of preferences extends beyond the preferences of state used in traditional utility theory, including complex preferences over the evolution of actions and state, leading to realization of the user’s objectives.

My current plan is to first understand and gain some background by reading relevant materials and then work on some of the previous work that was done on the same topic. Finally I would hopefully be able to design a solution and build a system that can be accessed on the Web.
